The iron cross date back to the 3rd crusades. When the "Teutonic knights" of the "H.R.E." march to Jerusalem, and the other city of the area.
It was designed by the neoclassical architect "Karl Friedrion Schinkel". It is made up of Iron, Silver, and a Copper zinc & nickel alloy
On the 10 March 1813 the Prussian King Frierich Wilhelm III awarded the metal in Bresau to the troops that fought in the war against Napoleon
Otto von Bismark used the symbol and the meaning of the "IRON CROSS" to unite Germany to form the 2nd reich in his campaign called "BLOOD and IRON"
When Adolf Hitler came to power he add a " Marching Swastika" to the iron cross, but it still had the same meaning. The metal was still given out to troops that earn it.
The symbol is still used to day by the German Army, and there Air force. In 2007 a petition to the German Parliment to revive the " IRON CROSS DECORATION" received over 5,000 signatures. In October 2008 the German defence minister instead created a new grade of the "Ehrenzeichen der Bundeswehr" ( Honor Cross of the Bundeswehr for bravery)
