The Must Watch of Jags vs Tampa Bay
Ok, it's still preseason, but last week's game against Miami gave us a lot to look forward to on the 18th at 7:30pm.
First, the offensive line last week had its fair share of what we hope were first-game jitters, and looked down right awful at times. Was this a simple case of getting their feet wet? Was Miami's defensive front that good? Or has the replacement of Dennis Norman for the injured Brad Meester really made that much of a difference?
The first team offense is expected to get a lot more reps in game 2, less in game 3 and finally very few most likely in game four. We can expect to see the most of the first team until the season begins.
So what are we looking for besides offensive line play? Well, for "starters" (pun!) we want to look at the run game... what? run game? Yes, absolutely. This new spread offense and the loss of kyle brady is going to change our running game around, and the re-introduction of Greg Jones could make things very interesting.
This will also be a good time to evaluate how players like Jones-Drew will be utilized, which is very important for fantasy owners. No matter how many touches he gets, consider it an understatement... while the first team offense wants to play as realistically as it can, it's fair to assume that the passing game will get more reps than the running game, simply because of the wear and tear nature of the position. No one wants to see an injured starting RB thanks to preseason. Still, we're going to try and run the ball more I'm sure, which should in turn give us a more realistic look of how the passing game should fair. I've got 50 bucks saying our first play is a run, and not a pass. Actually, $100 says our first play is a screen or drop pass to one of our RBs/FB. That's the bet, see if I'm right.
On defense, safety will be an important position to watch once again. We didn't get to see much last week thanks to Trent Green's dismal attempt at quarterbacking, and Jeff Garcia could prove to be more of a threat... or at least get the ball out in the general direction.
Keep your eye on Broussard. A lot of raving has been going on about Mike Walker, and his dislocated finger has given Broussard a chance to shine. If you haven't seen youtube videos of him... go do it now (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5PbCMocRpI). He seems to have great hands on top of his speed. He could be the play maker Jacksonville needs at WR. We need someone to transform themselves from possession receiver to big play guy... and Broussard looks to have all the tools to do it. He can catch well on the run especially, which is such an important aspect to a play-making receiver.
Don't forget to check out the defense either. Were we really as dominant as we looked against Miami, or were Trent Green's struggles a huge part of it? Tampa Bay doesn't look to be much of an offensive threat, but a lights out performance on defense would only further solidify the belief that we can have one of the best, if not the best defense in the league this year.
More info when I wake up.
