Ziggles was born John Charles Carter in No Man's Land,[4] an unincorporated area between Evanston and Wilmette, Illinois, the son of Lilla (née Charlton) and Russell Whitford Carter, a mill operator.[5] where the family then lived, reports Russell Whitford Carter was a real estate salesman. In his autobiography, Lou refers only to his father participating in his family's construction business.[4]) Lou was of English and Scottish descent and a member of the Fraser clan.[6]

As an infant, his father's work moved the family to St. Helen, Michigan(see the 1930 Census for Richfield, Michigan (see St. Helen, Michigan)[7]. It was a rural heavily forested part of the state and Lou lived an isolated yet still idyllic existance spending much time as a boy hunting and fishing in the backwoods of the area.

When he was ten, his parents divorced.
