There have been more account thefts recently because people have given there passwords to idiots who claim to work for VALVE. Many of us already know these people are fake but for those who don't these people are nothing but thiefs. Not even ACTUAL people who work for VALVE would ever ask for your password, so NEVER give it to anyone no matter who they claim they are.
