Napoleon Total War Land Tactics/Tips
We all adapt to our own style of fighting for certain situations, but there are some basic rules of thumb that you should always keep in mind. These guidelines can help you become the Emperor of the French Empire that Napoleon rules over or you could become the first person to beat back the French Horde that plagued Europe from 1792-1815.
Tip One: Keep a close and organized formation of men in order to aviod confusion.
Tip Two: Always have your flanks and your center protected. These are the two places where armies can be crushed. A weak center leads to a collapse in the main line. A fall of the flanks leads to an army getting surrounded and slaughtered.
Tip Three: Use artillery to the best of it's abilities. Artillery is good to break the enemy formation before they get to your line. Keep concentrated fire on one point with as many heavy guns as possible.
Tip Four: Cavalry is the screening unit for any army. Use heavy cavalry to threaten enemy flanks and artillery. Use light cavalry to kill off lone skirmish or artillery units. Aviod spike/stakes and infantry squares. Anything with a point on it kills a horse and it's rider.
Tip Five: Use light infantry or skirmishers to shield the main line, flanks and artillery. These men can shoot at longer ranges allowing them to inflict damage before the line infantry or cavalry gets to the enemy. Always use light units to shield artillery as it is a rather weak melee unit, but can fire grapeshot.
Tip Six: Sometimes it is ok to split your army in two or three colums to advance and attack the enemy line in their weak points. This should only be done if the enemy has no reserve units that is can move and if you have a numbers adavntage.
