A relatively new feature is on steam. Its called email verification. Once you verify your email address, to change anything on your account like your password you need to receive an email with the verification code on your verified email account. So if your email account is different from steam, you might have been saved from a hack attempt. To verify your account go to File, Settings, Verify your account.
