I have too many friends and I've been running out of space in my list for the last few weeks now. This is just a way of avoiding Steam's retarded limit.
You being in this group frees up a spot on my friends list. If I talk to you often, or I care about you at all, I'll keep you in my main list. That means that you don't have to worry about joining this group, because I would probably just delete you anyway even if you weren't in it and I needed an extra slot.
