Quick Rule Breakdown:
The goal of mahjong is to make a hand consisting of 4 sets (triplets called pons or sequences called chiis) and one pair. There are two exceptions to this rule: Seven pairs and 13 orphans.
However, in order to claim a win a player needs at least one yaku (multiplier). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Mahjong_yaku for a list of yaku.

It was called (麻雀), meaning sparrow in ancient China, which is still the name most commonly used in some southern Chinese dialects such as Cantonese and Minnan, as well as in Japanese.
