Steam: Restrictions in Japan...soon rest of the world?
Some unfortunate users of Steam living in Japan have been the first to be introduced to a very nasty new feature of Steam. Basically, games that are not released in your region apparently will no longer EVER be playable over Steam in affected regions.

Thus if for example, you purchase DA:O from the US then move to Japan, you will no longer be able to play your purchased game. If you ask someone to gift the game to you from the US, you will not be able to play your gift. Details can be found here:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1012091

So be aware, Valve now enforce access to your games based on your current IP and no longer apply restrictions for Steam store bought games at the point of purchase only. Expect this feature to be expanded upon in the near future to affect more regions and more games.

News thanks to DAO_Japan. You can discuss this issue here.

@Giiwigaabaw: I hope you're joking because people in the USA are actually "dirty foreigners" who moved to America a few hundred years ago.

Did you know that people in other countries make games too? And Steam sells them. It seems that you don't understand some elementary "terms" like Steam, Valve, USA, "other countries",...

Thats one issue we dont have yet. All our steam games (australia) are listed in USD and so with AUD being like $0.90 it works out cheaper than retail (which are $90ish). They'll "fix" it soon though... The odd thing though is, australia is accused of one of the highest rates of piracy...

till the stupid 1dolar is 1euro change was made, i bought 12games through steam, from that moment none ... and this is another reason for not buy stuff on steam anymore ... ok ... valve stuff maybe, but thats it ... why should i pay more through the internet, when the games in retail shops (they pay for shipping, for the package of the product, the manual and other bullshit) cost less as through the online distribution ... why should i ... and why should i be restricted to play games from other regions, some games dont come to europe ... here in slovakia there are no limitations to games as in australia or in germany but we have here only a bunch of shops and the prices arent that low ... most of my friends dont own a single original game ... why is that ... because of such fools as the ppl who make decicions like this ... i wish steam would change back the way it was ... sorry for ther rant

Australia has had this issue for a bit now too. We can only buy/download low-vilence versions of games, even if gifted from overseas.

Wow, they are really starting to get a bit counter-productive... Now that just has to piss you off, if you buy a game and it gets blocked...

Bottom line: great freaking job, Steam.
