UPDATE 2008-07-24
Childred of the Nile has received an update that fixes the achievements. I have tested this and it works.

The devs of The Wonderful End of the World has worked a fix for their game, and it is currently being tested. Expect to see an update soon. Also, all achievements you have acquired in this game will be awarded immediately when you run the game after the patch becomes live.

Sorry for the flux of posts the last couple days, but there is always something that needs to be said.
Well it turns out that the new steamworks enabled game "The wonderful End of the World" doesn't properly activate achievements.
This is starting to become a letdown, as there are now three games that no one can properly get achievements on, all in quick succession.
Here is a short summary:
Planet Busters: Although the achievements work fine on this game, the game crashes to desktop on certain levels. This makes it impossible to get to the higher levels of the game. The developer says he can't reproduce it, but has found some bugs that may be the cause.
Children of the Nile: The game runs fine, but the achievements are never given when expected. The developer has acknowledged the problem and will fix it ASAP.
The Wonder End of the World: The achievements are shown in-game as being achieved, but steam never gets the achievements for the stats page. The developers have been contacted, but we are still waiting for a response.
UPDATE: The developers have responded and say they will fix it.
So if you are in the boat of trying out these games and are having troubles, this may help shed some light on things.
Thanks to all my minions(...er...fellow whores(...er...achievers)) for reporting these to me.
