With another 50 entries in Wave 2 of the Killing Floor “Grindhouse” Mapping Contest, the quality has truly astounded us this time. The judging came down to the wire, with the top two maps being separated by the smallest possible amount. After many re-counts, KF-Icebreaker, created by Damien Laurent and Yoann Guilloud takes the grand prize of $10,000, just edging out KF-Departed, created by Jeroen van Wamelen and Jessy De Lannoit. Both are superb maps and the judges have enjoyed playing them!

Our congratulations go out to all the entrants in the contest. Once again, the Killing Floor community has put in a huge effort, creating over 100 maps during the course of the competition. The top 3 maps from Wave 2, along with their prizes, are:

1. First Place – KF-Icebreaker by Damien Laurent and Yoann Guilloud wins the $10,000 grand prize. One of the most ambitious, creative, and visually stunning Killing Floor maps entered in the contest, Icebreaker is set on a large icebreaking ship that is pitching and rolling in the middle of a fierce storm.

2. Second Place – KF-Departed by Jeroen van Wamelen and Jessy De Lannoit, wins an Nvidia 3D Vision bundle (22" 120Hz Samsung LCD + 3D Vision glasses), plus a G19 keyboard, a G13 advanced gameboard and an MX518 optical gaming mouse, all from Logitech. Departed is a visually impressive level set in an industrial city area outside of London. Featuring hectic gameplay this map plays as good as it looks.

3. Third Place – KF-Crash by Michael Hewish and Corey Sine wins a G19 keyboard, a G13 advanced gameboard and an MX518 optical gaming mouse, all from Logitech. Crash is an impressive remake of a classic custom map for the original Killing Floor mod. The map is set in an urban storage facility where your team’s helicopter has crashed.

We are happy to announce that Killing Floor is now available in stores in Australia. The first chain is JB Hi-Fi, across the country. Our thanks to N3V Games, the local distributor in Australia, for this one. MSRP for the retail version is $29.95 (Aussie dollars) and the game is rated MA 15+, for the same version available on Steam or in stores across Europe and North America.

We have just rolled out KF Build 1011. This small update should fix the following issues:

Windows 2000 users who could no longer use Killing Floor


In game hitching/freezing apon seeing a specimen for the first time.

A small update has been released for Killing Floor including the following changes:

- Fixed exploits on KF-Bedlam, KF-BioticsLab, KF-Farm, KF-Manor,
KF-Offices, and KF-Wyre.

- Further reduced the memory utilization in Killing Floor.

This update does not change the version number, so all server admins must update thier servers to avoid mismatches when connecting. If you get a mismatch when connecting to a server, please try another server as that means the server has not been updated yet.

Alright guys, it seems that this is mostly an issue with Windows Vista and Windows 7, only 10-20% of the people with issues are on XP. This also applies to a wide range of machines(even on the latest and greatest machines available).

Basically, Windows Vista and 7 LOVE to throw things into the page file, especially when an Application takes more than 10% of the physical RAM available. I ran Windows 7 and was seeing 25-10,000 Page File hits per second while playing(with up to 25,000 during loading). This didn't cause much of an issue on either of my machines, because my main drives are not where Killing Floor is installed, and they are faster drives that are fully defragged.

For machines running Windows Vista or Windows 7(with 3+ GB of RAM), it seems that turning off the Page File safely fixes long loads.

For all other machines, especially those with 1-2 GB of RAM, it would be unsafe/unnecessary to turn off the Page File. The best that can be done is to use a good defrag tool(such as MyDefrag or Ultimate Defrag) to try make sure the page file and Killing Floor's files are not spread out across the hard disk.

Also, make sure that your Anti-Virus is not scanning every file Killing Floor loads before allowing Killing Floor to access the file. This can be done by adding an exception for the Killing Floor directory into your Anti-Virus.

Also, in an issue that appears to be similar, some players have also improved load times and game performance by disabling their second monitor.
