It's been a year since we first launched Steam Greenlight and asked the community to help us select new titles to be released on Steam. A lot has happened in that time, including many additions and advances to the Greenlight system itself as well as huge strides behind the scenes as we build better tools in order to increase the number of titles we can make available via Steam.
In addition to enlisting the community’s help with the selection process, Greenlight represents an effort to help increase the volume of independent titles being published on Steam. Since Greenlight launched on August 30 of last year, the total number of independent titles available on Steam has doubled to over 580 with hundreds more still in development and scheduled to release in the coming months. Meanwhile the volume of new Greenlight submissions has shown no signs of slowing with an average of four new titles being submitted every day.
In today's official release
on the subject, Gabe Newell said, “Ultimately our goal is to have no bottlenecks at all between developers and consumers. As we move closer to that, launching Greenlight and evolving our backend toolset has helped us increase our publishing throughput, pushing the number of independent titles released in the last twelve months to equal the number of titles published from all other categories combined. We expect that number to grow dramatically as we continue to iterate upon our developer service features and seek more ways to improve Steam’s value to the community.”
Just yesterday, we announced
the latest batch of 100 titles to receive the Greenlight, bringing the total number of titles offered worldwide Steam publishing agreements via Greenlight to 260. That has helped us release nearly 300 games on Steam this year, half of which are from indie developers.
This expansion of our catalog and addition of content is naturally going to come with a need to innovate and iterate on how customers browse for games and evaluate potential purchases, and is something we’re working on addressing. We’re committed to ensuring that Steam is the best place for developers to find and engage with an audience, and for customers to find the games they want to play.
To celebrate the anniversary, over 50 of the released Greenlit games are on sale for up to 75% off through September 1st. Check them out here
