Another motivation to consider is other VR platforms: Oculus has more face buttons (and joystick which some prefer), the Windows MXR controllers will have both joysticks and touchpads, and even the PS Move has 5 face buttons (although lacking in the joystick/touchpad department). As a dev, this fractured controls environment makes it a headache trying to develop game mechanics that provide a great user experience on all platforms.

I agree with Godelbrot. Having just one face button is extremely limiting on the Vive controllers. Having an additional button on the knuckles (and as I saw on LG's controllers) is a step in the right direction, however it will create a fractured landscape, as devs will not be able to truly rely on it and only bind tertiary actions, as most users will likely be using the old Vive controllers. I doubt this late into development any major changes are possible, but I hope devs at Valve realize that we need more inputs, in particular joysticks. I understand Valve's sentiment that we should be using VR to move away from abstractions, however as VR apps get more complex, we will need more inputs to trigger user actions.

it's looking good, for the final version I think it would be awesome to have a joystick and facebuttons so that it could have input parity with the Steam Controller

A huge part of what interests me about VR is just standard every day Computing in VR, like Bigscreen or Virtual Desktop, so being able to control "legacy" games and desktop interfaces (which the Steam Controller CAN) would be a major plus in the final version.

Also Valve you better get going with your own version of Bigscreen or you stand to get your whole Platform undermined by something even more ubiquitous ;)

It looks fantastic!
