Why on earth I had not even heard about this news but instead all kinds of useless crap *insert useless info here? This is extremely important news and I had to find it months later with google myself, lol.

Audio in games have been for the last half-decade so horrible so that it's about time we get some focus on it again instead of the constant need of more realistic hairphysics and whatever irrelevant things.

@cpt. Walker: Unity3d is a piece of ungodly crap that is flooding the marketplace with its sub-par design, constant performance issues, and cut and paste survivor templates. Unreal is far from dead, they even recently got an amazing update to their sound engine (that allows this to be added as a plugin) and their repository gets updated daily. Epic even does twitch live streams with questions for the community to learn how to do things with the engine. If you have a problem with UE4 THEN GO FIX IT! The source code is readily available so you don't have to buy a "source code license"(as the unity tards put it) to get access. The only thing I liked about unity was it's strong ECS implementation over UE4's monolithic approach but most unity dev's don't even understand this paradigm anyway.

Thank you Thank you Thank you. Me as an VR-Indie-Developer with Unity, I have an eye on the phonon3d plugin since months( years ? :). Happy that you take care of it now, as I think that audio is at least as important for immersion as video is. Now with this framework in your hands valve-people, I am very happy looking forward for 3d sound from now on. This is an area where I think many low-Budget Indie-titles have to improve upon ( Audio - Ambient & SoundFX ). Finally this becomes a whole lot more fun and easier, enabling us to create way more immersive experiences. Thank you, and thank you 100x for making it free. Thank you :D

Can you make a conversion tool from XACT and XAudio (from XNA) to SteamAudio?

To Steam, I express my eternal gratitude!
To commenters, yes the HRTF feature needs headphones, but it's worth it and will create dynamic direction changes (including up/down) that speakers can never do.

This is super exciting! After the recent release of Google's VR audio plugin, a fellow 3D audio designer and I were discussing how we'd love a plugin that just does everything right out of the box, including partial occlusion, surface material detection and reflections, bakeable reverb for static scenes, etc... and the next day this was announced. Once the FMOD/Wwise integrations are up this is going into all of my VR projects! :-D
