I'm quite happy to see that Oculus is involved on this. last year Palmer said that "The VR ecosystem is too new to make standards" and that it would "limit experimentation if we standardize everything" IIRC. That's sounded a bit shortsighted IMO.

Shouldn't HTC be involved too?

Like it or not, when Windows became a place for developers of hard/software it was because there were 200+ million (even more today) PCs running Windows. Anyone could make and sell a PC, just add Windows. It was managed and standardized by MS. It’s NOT perfect by any means but it was and is the foundation to build a million-dollar software company on a PC.

VR standard MUST be strictly managed and standardized to be compatible with many different platforms and devices. With this the DEVS will be falling over one another to create apps and games. Not to mentiion the hardware DEVs. A strong, firm foundation for developers to go creatively in the vast, should I say infinite VR.

This is awesome! Long live the Khronos group and long live Vulkan API!
Hopefully this will help GNU/Linux support in the future!
