American mechanics in the south Pacific would work amazing hours... After the a "hot mission" they would work continuosly fixing, replacing and repairing for 30 to 40 hours and then sleep for 12 hours. If they got some slack time, they were encouraged to modify their aircraft engines and armament this is especially true for the Army units. The Marines would race the Army for a case of booze that the pilots would buy and put up, but the mechanics would get half of if they won. As I understand it from this one Marine pilot named John Potfora, the Army P38s won every single time. They won even when they moved the races down low, where the Marines Corsairs were expected to win but didn't.
