Yeah I was expecting them to either have play time or number of games owned factor into XP.

It should be because trading isn't the main
fault to use steam and I think only a very small group
of steamusers use the market.
But as usual, we will see what happens.

Well I'm not sure how the EXP system works as of yet but I got around 400XP just for having 9 years of steam service, so perhaps a chunk of XP for having 20+ games would be a nice add on aswell.

I agree it seems like it could be just a start. I certainly hope it will be expanded over time to include things more related to actually playing games (achievements, periodic resets on the in-game card drop limit, etc).

As far as I have gathered, you get XP based on you badges.

The first 10 levels require 100 XP each. So level 10 = 1,000 XP

Then from level 11 to 20, you need 200 XP per level, and from 21 to 30 you need 300 XP per level, and so on.

The Year badge gives you 50 XP for every 1 year your account is. So if you have 4 years for example, you get 200 XP. Your 9 year badge gives you 450 XP, which is 4½ steam levels.

The trading card badges gives you 100 XP for each level of the card-set you craft. Each card set can be crafted (or upgraded) a maximum of 5 times, equalling a total of 500 XP for a fully upgraded set.

Some of the seasonal badges (such as the x-mas coal event, the summer tickets, etc.) seem to be linked to how well you did during the event. So the more potatoes, coals, tickets or whatever you managed to collect, the more XP the badge gives you.

Other seasonal badges just give you 100 XP provided that you completed the badge during the event.
