What caused the mods and admins to sundenly decide to ban any person that was off topic or aven just for creating a silly thread?

Chances are the threads that you are talking about are spam or pointless in nature.

Usually when a forum gets out of control, we have to be more strict. The good news is 99% +/- of the threads and people are good. It's the 1% that causes problems.

(non-sarcastic) question: What's the standard for deciding, in the off-topic forum, whether a thread is "too" off-topic? For example, what caused this thread to be locked?

I can't see either how a thread about the death of a man who has directly influenced the design of one of the biggest SF movie franchises and therefore half a dozen PC games (inlcuding a new release coming this year) can be too off-topic for Steam.....

This isn't the obituaries. Someone passing away is sad, yes, but it isn't something that needs to be discussed in a forum.

It was locked instead of deleted out of respect for the individual, but still is not appropriate for the forums.
