How does the new friend search engine work?

So with the update a few weeks ago the whole player search changed and I can no longer find anyone that I want to add whom I meet ingame. It's been like this various times now, is there a way to get the "old" community search engine back?
Or is there a way I can disable the new one?

What else dose username stand for? i mean we have Username (what we use to login) the Display name (Like my Black Blade), the Real Life name on profile and last the URL

I mean everytime I login to Steam, it shows Account Name and Password.

Nickname is like as you said Display name I quess, I also call it username, I could be wrong about that
