New to Steam and to gaming
I retired from work last month; I have a lot more leasure time. Actually, I opened a Steam account about two years ago, but never got around to using it. So, I consider myself to be a beginner with Steam and gaming.

I have a question (not sure if this is the right forum) but here it is. I have been looking at Mafia 2 as a game I might begin with. When I looked, I found that Steam wanted about 30 bucks for it. Then, I went to Amazon and found they had a DVD that could be ordered and sent to the consumer for $10.49--then I noticed they have an electronic download of the same game for $29.99. What I haven't been able to wrap my head around, nor have I discovered on line, is why would an electronic version of a game be some 20 buck more than a DVD version. If you have any idea why this might be so, I'd be glad for your input.

The DVD version may also be a used copy, in which case it wouldn't work anyway - as CD keys are unique to accounts.

But just wait until around holiday time this year; Steam has two big sales every year, one in the summer, and one during the holidays. I guarantee you that it will go on sale then.

Bill, a cost saving tip, try to wait and buy games only when they're on sale. Obviously this is harder to do when you've just started and don't have any/many games to keep you busy in between. Age of the title also affects how much they're discounted most of the time.

Steam does weekend sales. Daily deals. Free weekends where you can dl a featured game and play it for the weekend for free and then decide if you want to keep it. Then, twice a year, they have huge sales that run for about a week. They are simply the Summer and Winter sales. Each day there are "flash" sales on multiple games for 8 hours at a time and then a new set is put up at heavily discounted prices. In addition each day has an assortment of games that are on sale for the entire day. At the end of the sale many of the games are put back on sale for one last buying chance so if you miss one during the week you might be able to get it for dirt cheap again.

General rule of thumb with Steam...never buy at full price unless you just HAVE to have it right then and there.

Also some games are huge downloads (the newest Wolfenstein is well over 10 gigs iirc, I don't have it, yet...swear I saw somewhere where it was over 20?) so keep that in mind if you don't have an uberfast connection and intend to play a new game right away.

Oh, btw if you weren't aware of their existence, since Steam recently revamped their store client the links to the forums discussing each game have been severely shrunk and hidden farther down the page (I think this was on purpose as many games don't get good reviews, but that's my cynicism). Always always always read the Steam forums and preferably other off-site reviews/forums before buying. Good luck and welcome!

It seems that player is giving away games they don't want, which is strange!

As someone else already posted, the 10.00 game disc on Amazon is most likely a used game and the key code for it is not transferable.

Steam will be having their Winter [Christmas] sale soon. It usually starts around the second week of December. There will be HUGE price drops on many games.

Until then, you saying that Mafia 2 looks like a game you might enjoy tells me that you may be looking for open world, RPG and FPS games. If so, I'd like to suggest you take a look at Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition, Skyrim Legendary Edition and Far Cry 3 Deluxe Edition [also FC4 if your pc specs can handle it, mine can't]. Those 3 titles are all open world games which to me are far more enjoyable than most linear corridor shooters are.

I stand corrected:

I forgot that there were two sales last year around this time. And the traditional flash sales are missing. Voting.
