TF2 Not Letting me switch classes

So when I join a match, a little grey rectangle appears in the top left corner of the screen when I press the switch class key. Then, ti wont let me move or do anything until I press they key again. Thus, I can only be a heavy because it just pops up as a heavy without me choosing a class. This is getting really annoying and I hope someone can help me.
