Could not load library client?

HL2: DM won't load. I get to the load screen then I get a beach ball of death. I have to force quit to get out of it, and then I see a box come up that says : Unable to load library client. when I search the steam forums for this isssue it just gives instructions for windows, not for mac. I've done everything I can think of to do, like defrag and verify the cache but no luck. This started right after the last update but in the mean time I had completely erased and reinstalled both steam and HL2DM Anyone else have this issue? I'm on 10.5.8
