Uninstall and reinstall. Between that restart Steam.

would uninstalling and reinstalling totally delete your profile? I mean, I just got a sweet weapon for my heavy, and I'm prould of my achievements. Would I lose all of those?

Same problem, i'm too scared to reinstall because of the risk of losing everything.

ppl, I just had to do all of this to fix my crashes.

Go to account and make a backup of all your purchases
You can then delete your content (FT2) from teh steam app.

Personally I would also use something like appdelete to get rid of the steam app as well.

restart
Redownload and install steam then TF2 from their servers and get a fresh copy.

Be sure to have your account name and PW's saved on paper!

all your account info (backpack and achievements) are saved in the steam cloud and not on your local drives.... you'll lose nothing if you do it correctly.

IF this works feel free to buy me a crate key or somthing ;D

Items are NOT stored in steam cloud, they are on valve's item server,so reinstall without backuping purchases,w/o fear

If you leave it, it downloads files in the background. No, they won't show up in "Downloads". Yes, it will eventually allow you to close the box without cancelling the validation. Just leave it on in the background.

Whenever it does that for me I just have to wait a bit. After it finishes you should be ok.

(solution without reinstalling anything, takes only a couple minutes)
For anyone still having problems with validating files, the solution that i found that always works is:
1. completely close steam
2. go to finder
3. go to library/application support/steam
4. delete regristry.vdf
5. Reopen Steam
6. right click on the game that yo are having the problem with
7. click "properties"
8. Go to the section called "local files" or some sort of similar name
9. click "defragment cache"
10. It will take a couple of minutes to defrag, but when its complete the game should be fully playable with no more validation (untill the next update, or untill it feels like doing it again)
