Games fail to launch
Installed DOTA2, tried to launch it, the little bash script icon appears in the dock and then quickly disappears (less than a second). Tried all of the usual things such are verifying the download, starting in -safeboot and -autoconfig, reinstalled game and steam - no luck. Running 10.8.3 on a Mac Pro.

Try updating your OS.
Also check for any error message in "Console".

Doesn't seem to be an OS issue, more of a Steam Issue to me. I've seen some other people having this problem a while back in 2011, some of them reported deleting the Tahoma font worked for them! Here's some details from system.log:

Yes, it's clearly a bug in the application. Some function named "ZN12GLMDisplayDB17PopulateRenderersEv" is performing a call on what it believes to be a "Data" object -- but it's actually a "String" object. Those two are quite different things, and the "String" object has no clue how to perform the "Data"-operation so the whole thing goes down.

Given the length of the stack trace, the game developers can probably track this to a likely source even if it doesn't happen for them. The main problem, of course, is to get information that such a crash exists to them in the first place...

Kolormolor/A | J o 0^, this is what I have received from steam support over the past few weeks, the problem has not been cured for me though. Please could you advise which version of MAC OSX you are using. I have since replied to the instructions provided on the 12th but have been on holiday which is why there is such a delay. If any of these fix the issue for you please could you let me know.

Additionally, if you are still having problems please could you post your steam.log and your system.log output

================================================================

5th September 2013:
Please exit Steam and remove the Steam application from the location you installed it in (Applications by default) by dragging it to the Trash.

Also go to the folder Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Steam

Note: If you are using Lion please do the following to access your Steam folder:

1. Click "Go" in the menu bar
2. Click "Go to Folder..."
3. Type "~/Library/Application Support/Steam"
4. Click "Go"

This will take you directly to the folder.

Delete all of the files and folders in the /Steam folder except for /SteamApps.

Then, redownload Steam from http://cdn.store.steampowered.com/public/client/installer/steam.dmg and reinstall the application.

Then, you will need to launch Steam.app from your Dock or Applications folder.

With Steam running, re-test the original issue.

Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games.

================================================================

7th September 2013:
Please follow the instructions below to participate in the Steam client beta which may correct the issue you are seeing:

1) In Steam, click on "Steam" in the upper left, then choose the "Settings" menu. (Preferences on Mac)

2) On the "Account" tab under "Beta Participation" click the "Change..." button.

3) Select the desired beta test from the "Beta Participation" drop down list and click "OK".

4) You will be prompted to restart Steam, please select the "Restart Steam" button.

NOTE: In some cases, you may need to perform these instructions *twice* for the beta to take affect.

================================================================

9th September 2013:
Please try the following:

Exit any open game.

Open Steam.

Select "Library" near the top, then choose "Games".

Find the game you are having difficulty with in the list.

Right-click on the game and click "Properties."

Uncheck the "Enable Steam Community In-game" checkbox.

================================================================

12th September 2013:
Please exit any open applications.

Then, click the Apple icon in the top left of your screen.

Select System Preferences.

Under the System section, select Users & Groups (or Accounts, in older versions of OS X).

Click on your user name in the left panel.

Note: Your account may already be selected. If so, continue to the next step.

Then, click the Login Items button to the right.

We recommend keeping a separate list of all items that occur here, so they can be re-added in the future.

Click on each individual item and click the minus button found below the list.

Please remove all items from this list.

To avoid removing these items, you can also use a free tool called TinkerTool to simply deactivate these items.

http://bresink.de/osx/0TinkerTool/download.php5

Once these items are removed/deactivated, restart your computer and re-test the issue.

I have resolved the issue. I went to System/Extra, and edited the org.chameleon.boot.plist with the following:

<key>PCIRootUID</key>
<string>1</string>

Many thanks for your replies. If you are still having trouble I would try launching games other than Steam Games to see if you still get the same issue, if so, it is a graphics card configuration issue.
danielplainview Nov 18, 2013 @ 12:27am
i have the same issue, but where is this System/Extra file located?
Saul Goodman Nov 18, 2013 @ 1:13pm
Assuming you are on Mavericks, it has actually changed directory in this OS. Open 'Finder' and at the menu bar at the top go to "Go" > "Go to folder.." now type /Extra and hit OK.
