Can you reconnect Steam for Mac without restarting Steam?

I find it really annoying when I go to activate a Shift code in Borderlands 2 and find that Steam is no longer connected. I have to quite Borderlands 2 and then restart Steam.
Why is there no RECONNECT button anywhere in Steam?

if you're in-game such as dota 2 or cs;go, you can't JUST restart steam. Valve should fix it soon, people are getting punished and shoved into low priority or even prohibiting from searching, playing matches because steam won't "automatically" reconnect back. Volvo should not be putting "automatic" if it doesn't do it's job correctly, in fact it's actually more convenient if they put a manual reconnect button rather then let the stand alone program to do the job. Seriously, anything can tip steam off; if your ping is too high, if you dc from the internet for more then a sec, sometimes even process lagging might even render your steam to "brick".
