Steam says my game is still running

I recently bought a new game and i cant seem to re-open the game after I exit once. How do i fix this problem? on a sidenote im relatively new to steam so please be as detailed as possible

i have the same problem sometimes and the only way to fix it is to force quit steam

That's typical of all computers at times... I run a free util (Google it to get it) called cmdQuit
I run it at start up. At any time I can choose selective quit, I get a list of all running apps and can kill one that didn't exit properly. On my PC's - control Alt Del does the same - brings up a list of all processes and I can kill any that might be hung up.

Go to the top left corner at the apple icon and just force quit the application sometimes computers just don't want to stop playing
