Ghost Recon. You can play with 7 other friends and I am not talking about GRAW or GRFS.

I'd definately recommend Killing Floor, played for over 500 and still going strong, even made another account just to buy it again

For 2 players over lan (you can also play over the internet but it is much more stable on lan) I would suggest System Shock 2. The co-op mode is a bit buggy but it is still alot of fun.

Dead Space 3 has a fantastic co-op mode. You play through the same story as in single player, but in co-op there's extra dialogue and co-op specific side missions. It's a lot of fun. 2 player only though.

Orcs must Die 2 (for 2 players) can be a lot of fun, and I'd also say Left4Dead2 is a lot of fun. For 4 players, I can see a person and 3 friends having a lot of fun with it. That or getting a Real Time Strategy game and all playing against each other or in teams could be a lot of fun also.

I would have to say that the co op on portal 2 is awesome and l4d2 is amazing with friends. I also recommend Borderlands.

MineCraft

All it takes is a bit of brains to get a two-person server running,
which any gaming PC can do, and any good internet connection can handle.

Also, if you find that it's too hard to set up, you can get
a LAN party running with almost zero tech knowledge,
although that requires that you both be in the same physical location.

Red Alert 3 isn't the best co-op game that I've ever played, but it does the job alright. For what's been said before, Killing Floor, Payday, and of course Left 4 Dead 2.

I don't think so. If you use Hamachi I believe it will work over a distance. I can't say for sure though. I tried setting up a server with port forwarding, hamachi, and LAN parties with hamachi, and the server didn't work... Maybe it was because my friend was on a mac, but that's beside the point. I think it works, but I'm not sure.

I guess it might be harder than it looks to set up a server...
I tried teaching some IRL friends how to do it... didn't work.

As long as this topic is revived:

All that stuff can be done in game except firing
dual pistols in two different directions at once.
