Did I just fry my power supply?
I was playing GTA V as usual. My PC was making a very loud noise. It does that when I play gta. Then all of a sudden my monitor blacks out and my PC's lights are off. I can't turn it on. It smelled very bad. So...did I just fry my power supply?

My specs are:
AMD A8-6600K CPU 3.9 Ghz
Nvidia GeForce GT 730 2 GB GPU
8 GB Ram

Most likely, or something else fried, but most likely the power supply

Shouldn't PCs these days shut down automatically in case of overheating?

Are you on your PC now or it is a different computer?
Actually my fans are almost always spinning very fast. I think that is where the sound comes from. Im on a phone. I am waiting for the PC to cool down.

Hmm, maybe your computer did automatically shutdown but damage was already done. That said if you have a weird smell, I think there was definitely something damaged. You might want to open it up and look at the parts in a few hours. I would not do anything with it now, it could be dangerous. Make sure it is completely unplugged as well.
Ok, thanks. The smell came immediately after everything went off.

You did something to your PC and like Valta said I would wait a while before checking it all out. What are you running GTA on because you could compare that to what your PC is said to be able to handle and ajust acordingly

Also, use something like OpenHardwareMonitor to track temperatures.
That smell is either power supply or burned out fan. can you check your cpu fan to see if it still works

In that case your PSU is most likely fried. Fortunately PSU's aren't terribly expensive.

I already lost two due to lightning power spikes.
