Advice on the upgrade that makes the most money sense.
I have a H61 motherboard with a i3 2120 cpu right now. Want to know if it makes more money sense to upgrade cpu only to i5 compatible or go with a motherboard cpu upgrade thinking either haswell or maybe amd for cost savings. Or am I still good for a while? What do you think and thank you for your time.

Depends on the rest of your system.

The 2 core i3 is your weak point, everything else is okay, although 1333mhz or 1600mhz ram could be a suggestion. (Could look at overclocking 1066mhz ram but can be touchy.)

A supported i5 'k' model processor (eg: 2500k, 3570k) would be a good move.

1155 socket is still very viable right now. I say you upgrade your CPU to a decent i5 quad, and if you have any money left over upgrade your ram. I THINK H61 can only support setting ram frequency to 1333 as it's highest(Possibly more as "Overclock"?). So, I would only upgrade to there, as 1600 might be a waste. However, 1600 will work perfectly fine at 1333 and you may find 1600 cheaper than 1333.

If you feel your system is still delivering good performance, I wouldn't upgrade the CPU. That H61 chipset on your motherboard is targeted at the budget market, so don't even consider overclocking on it.

It's 2 core, it's not delivering good performance, trust me.

Your system is bogged down by your CPU, a dual core isn't a great match to put into the ring with a 760, just can't keep up.

what model mobo
some oem boards will not take i5 quads
i3 was a good budget gaming cpu still better than amd quads
if it will take an i5 2xxx or i5 3xxx (board may need a bios update for 3xxx cpu)
