Something like i7-2600K or i7-3770K would do just fine, even today.
Biggest thing is, to keep up now, you want:
16GB RAM
SSD + HDD
Win10 64bit
But yea let us know the PC hardware specs and the Power Supply model soon as you find out, if all that was purchased 5 years ago, then we can get an idea from the specs what to do. Like if it would be a good idea to get a newer PSU.
He may be giving you a computer, but I would doubt the story. It just screams "I'm trying to be a cool guy and help out my buddy's son, so I'm going to buy him a computer".
My advice, accept the gift for whatever it is. Enjoy it. Humor him and his story as well.
