Series That Need Forced Game Sorting
The most recent client update reports an enhancement: “Improve library sort order for certain game series”. In reviewing the contents of appinfo.vdf file, I see that there is now a “sortas” element for games, and that Valve has already fixed some of the worst offending series by adding values to force games to sort properly within a series when they would not otherwise according to the title.

I still have several series in my library that don’t sort correctly, so hoping to start this thread for everyone to list those series and what the proper sort order is, so that hopefully Valve will add these values for the affected games. In cases where games are prequels, I've stuck with chronological release order, as this is the natural order they’re intended to be played, except for straight remakes or “enhanced editions” like Half-Life: Source. I've also left out multiplayer components (e.g., Deathmatch Classic in the Half-Life series) here, mostly because I don’t install or play them, but feel free to comment on those.

I’ll also note, there are some series where not every game is available on Steam, so it would be great if “holes” could be left in the sort order so that if we add those non-Steam games manually we can name them appropriately so that they’ll fall in line. I've indicated these games in [] in my lists below.

Shadow Warrior Series:
1. Shadow Warrior Classic (1997)
2. Shadow Warrior Classic Redux
3. Shadow Warrior (2013)

I realize that in a few extreme cases sorting by series brings individual titles wildly out of their normal sort order and may make it a bit confusing to find them (e.g., Uru sorting with Myst or Blood Omen 2 sorting with the rest of the Legacy of Kain Series, or the awful mess of the Penny Arcade series), but in my mind at least it makes much more sense for them to group with their series.

In the long run I'd like this data moved out of a centralised file and treated more like the user-editable metadata we see on, say, music files. Well, okay, I guess the actual place the data is stored isn't important really; more the fact that it should be editable on a per-game basis from within Steam, not by finding and opening some non-standard Valve data file.

Point is, my music player lets me decide which album ("series") a track goes in, which number within that series it is, and even an alternate name for various attributes used specifically for sorting rather than display. I think letting people do this stuff themselves would ultimately be for the best, because (and I mean no disrespect here) while you may want Fallout Tactics in the middle of the series, to me it's an alphabetical list, so that's not the place I would naturally look for it. We should both be able to have our way.

Absolutely agree; ideally this should all be user editable, both the displayed name and the sort name (and maybe even some larger scope "series" tag that could be sorted/filtered by). That feature has been requested for years though, so baby steps, I guess. To the point of your example of Fallout Tactics, though, Valve does seems to have started down this road sorting series chronologically (See, for example, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood now sorts after Assassin's Creed II), so the orders I've proposed are in line with that. If the sortas tag is the only solution we're going to get, better to have it consistent across all series than having a few that got cherry picked sort chronologically and the rest sort alphabetically.

I just like that you didn't put GTA V in brackets, even though we don't have it on PC yet (but thank the Rockstar Gods it's finally on its way!)

Anyway, I think this idea is interesting. I hadn't noticed that it had already been implemented, as you say. I guess this means that the Hitman games will finally be in order (assuming they've already factored in for Contracts, the third game, which has only been on steam for about 2 months now). I guess this is a good thing, if properly implemented, because I would certainly prefer if Absolution went at the end of the list instead of the beginning, considering it's the newest game in the series. But I can appreciate the other argument that we should be able to sort it our own way... I feel that a proper sorting system for the Steam library is far overdue.

Using http://steamdb.info is considerably less tedious than inspecting appinfo.vdf yourself, incidentally. Or app_info_print from the Steam console (steam://open/console)

You forgot about Deus Ex: The Fall which would be listed at number 4 in the Deus Ex series.

Worms Series:

  • Worms
  • Worms Pinball
  • Worms Armageddon
  • Worms Blast
  • Worms Ultimate Mayhem (since this is just a re-release of Worms 4 Mayhem I put it before Worms Reloaded though technically it was released after)
  • Worms Reloaded
  • Worms Crazy Golf
  • Worms Revolution
  • Worms Clan Wars

See, this is a good example of why these should really be user specified. For me, I would prefer to group these by narrative arc instead of release date order as the series splinters off into different lines (ie, the 3 Modern Warfare titles together, and World At War/Black Ops I/Black Ops II). That's just personal preference though; there's a strong argument to be made for both ways.
