Validating installation.... please make it stop!

I remember back in the day I got Half Life 2, and the then brand new Steam service drove me nuts with pop ups and reminders it was there. Those days are long since gone, thank goodness, and I actually like Steam.

But... for the past month or so, every single time I boot up, I get a white window announcing "Verifying installation..." with a green bar and my comnputer stops doing anything until Steam can verify for the thousandth time that this computer is still valid.

Can't you do this in the background and only bug me if there's a problem?

It shouldn't stop your computer from doing anything... reinstall Steam?
