The evolution to a pay-to-win / gambling business model means you should expect to pay a few hundred dollars if you want the best gear, so:2. Buying a starter pack for a free game might just be your way to go, if you're planning on spending those hundreds. If it included a month's subscription it might be worthwhile, but as it doesn't you'll have to decide if a single alternate ship, slightly more powerful than the ones you get for free, is worth $10. The other gear is garbage after about 20 minutes of play, so shouldn't weigh too much in the decision. For my money looking on EBay or Amazon for one of the collector's edition boxes from the game's original release almost 3 years ago is a better cost/value proposition.
