It's only pay to win if you are heavily invested in P v P and have little time to grind. The difference between free ships and ones you pay for aren't big enough to make a huge impact. It's mostly lots of grinding at the top level to get the best stuff, but the best stuff it doesn't mean ♥♥♥♥ if your build is bad. Levels 1-49 are perfectly fine. Reaching level 50 just means you either have to join a good fleet, pay, or grind in game for a long time if you want the best stuff. And even then the gain is minimal. Like most MMO's it suffers from obsessive numbers crunching at end game.

That said it is still the only traditional MMO I still enjoy playing. World of Tanks and Guns of Icarus Online are the other ones through they don't follow the traditional MMO format.

I'm a pretty big Star Trek fan, used to watch the series with my father as a kid, and I'm a big STO fan.

The game is a canonical nightmare, but it still very much manges to be Star Trek. The game has greatly improved from closed beta (to which I was involved in) to the PWE acquisition of STO and Cryptic from Atari.

The game isn't play-to-win and is one of the better F2P MMO's if you want to go that route. The C-store (in-game store) mainly supplies unique ships, character species, consumables and account unlocks.

The C-store ships are better than their 'free' counterparts; offering unique visuals, different bridge offficer layouts and console arrangements and a unique console item (Like the Operations Odyssey's saucer seperation, or the Defiant class cloak, or the Interprid class ablative armoring) but statwise (Shield regen, hull, crew number) are generally the same or similar.

If you like the game and sub up, you get a monthly stipend that you can use to buy stuff from the c-store. Or choose to work the Dilithium market and exchange Dilithium for Z-points.

Sounds cool ill give it a try

it's free so if your interested, try it definetly

pay to win is another matter. if you do hardcore PVP, then yes. it is difficult to win PVP without c-store items or lock box items.

PVE is not pay 2 win so much, I have seen many people with plain free ships out doing people who spent tons of money on their character.

I am as antisocial as it gets, I mosly play this game in a single-player/pug PVE mode, and I really enjoy it.

It fills my need to Trek-out every once in a while. There are many things I wish were different, but I still have lots of fun with it.

This is so ficking fun, yes try it. Its not addictive, and wont coax you into buying things either. And you learn a lot of history of the Trek Universe.

tl;dr version: Sorry for the wall-o-text below, take what ya want from it all and welcome to the game. It is a fun ride and great for Trek fans.

I am a big Star Trek fan myself, lifetime subber, and have been with the game since closed beta. I can say that the title is unique (as you probably have seen already as I assume you have played it). Here are some quick tips:

-Do not level fast, enjoy the brief ride. It does not take long to level and rushing to end game will leave you grinding reputation and the same STFs (queue up style group quest) over and over. Class choice is centerpoint but race is not that big an issue. I prefer Engineers for ground combat fun and tanking it up in space but Science is a blast as well with Tactical taking the rear seat for me (least flashiness, just a simple pew-pew-pew person that bores me quickly...but to each his/her own).

-Beware the in game store, things are EXPENSIVE. We are talking $25 for a single ship, or $50 for a triple pack (bought to get different special consoles from differing variant of the same ship...i.e set bonuses). Anyone that claims these ships are not better than free ships that you can get is mistaken. Player skill aside, the bought ships usually have more console slots and the like and thus better stat for stat.

-Also, stay away from lock boxes like they are the plague. The drop rates for special ships is very small and those ships (unlike in game store ship purchases) are tied to the one character that opens it, not account wide access for all characters. If you see a ship you really like, are set with the guy you like playing, then find a ship dealer and work something out. Technically not in line with the ToS but unless you shout what you doing, you will not get into trouble.

-Join a good Fleet that has been around awhile, caters to what you are looking for, and has a good reputation. Fleets give you access to a lot of resources, dependent on how advanced their facilities are.

I could go on but this is quickly becoming a tl;dr reponse. Just keep in mind that although the f2p model is nice, Cryptic/PWE will tax the daylights out of you for stupid things if you let them. The store is 90% a trap with the only good things maybe being account unlocks that are not that expensive. If you plan on farming dilithium and credits (dilithium being the main currency for end game) then be ready for a lot of very tedious grinding. As you get better at it you can cut down the time needed to farm but even skilled players will spend hours farming very tedious missions. Pro tip, unless it has been recently nerfed...check the Foundry (in game custom made player missions). There are missions that are designed to quickly cap you on daily dilithium and give a lot of credits.

Happy gaming and good luck. If you need help, please feel free to pm me here in the boards and I'll help you out any way I can. That is another nice thing about this game. It's nature seems to attract a very mature and clean (for the most part) community.

not going to be as long as that ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ :oD

I have recently joined it and it was on the recommendation of a friend (who's caned over 2,000 hrs in the game). This is the first MMO aside from WOWP that I have tried and enjoyed. Yes, the canon of trek isn't quite kept to but it's a great fun game nonetheless. I was lucky enough to have a friend who helped me hit the level cap quite quickly and I haven't paid a penny to play (and until I can drop £230 and not think about for lifetime subs) I don't intend to.

You can grind it (and power level) quite easily or you can just play casual and hit the level cap slowly. I converted a console gamer who's never played an MMO (and not as huge a trek fan as me) to play this on his low powered "business laptop" and now he has a steam account and is caning this more than he is GTA 5. (grr). I've not experienced much of the community but I generally fly with friends or PVE.

If you're a die-hard Trek fan then there are some missions that folllow the episodic style of a series with a mixture of ground/space parts to the missions. Anyway - it's FREE dude! You lose nothing by just giving it a go. You might surprise yourself and enjoy it (which is what happened to me and why I hit the level cap within two weeks). I started being a nay-sayer about it and now I can't get enough.

Definitely worth it, one of the few free to play MMOs I've bothered keeping up with. Granted, it helps being a fan of Trek in the first place, but even without that base it's got pretty solid space combat missions. The ground stuff's a bit more staple in nature but it's fun enough. Lots of side stuff to appeal to whatever kind of tweaking you like to do in persistent games, and the user-created content picks up nicely where the story seasons leave off. And hey, it's not like you have to pay to get into it.

I wont say much, but I will say that it would be HARD to pay to win. By that I mean that you'd have a hard time winning by spending money, seeing as ships (the ships you spend hard real life cash on) aren't 'that' better, and AFAIK the in game 'fleet' ships are superior.
