Mandatory Direct X installation
After the 4.7 gb install of Star Trek Online and the 1 GB patch in a program separate from Steam, I push "Play" to start gaming. Instead of starting, Steam starts installing Direct X. I already have the latest Direct X. Can I play without installing Direct X when I already have it?

Seems to be a Steam thing. Almost every game I've played with Steam Installs its own DirectX

I just need to save space on my hard drive for other things. Getting two copies of the same program is a waste of space. I would prefer if Steam could detect Direct X on my computer.

It doesn't make two copies of the same program. Just let it run, it will reinstall directx. I do wish steam had an option to not install, but no harm done, except a minute or two letting it install again.

Okay, but I have another issue I would like to address about Direct X. The Star Trek Online store page states in the "system requirements" section that Direct X 9.0 or higher is required. I have Direct X 11. If I let Steam reinstall Direct X, will it be 11 again or something else?

Nope, you will still have directx 11 and 9.0 and 8.0 and all that comes with directx.

There's many different versions of the programs was the answer I found when looking up why steam installs it for everything.

Usually what the direct x installer does is looks through each file for a comparison in the package, if its there then it skips to the next file. It takes a few seconds but it won't write anything if its not needed.
