Escort or Criuser - Carrier ?
Im now 50 and dont know what i should fly (tactical), i have most ships and points to buy some except the jem hadar ships. The main thing is, what i see escorts are overpowered in damage and not that bad in defense. So what benefit i get from using other ships as escort ships ?

Surely i get one andorian escort later but i prefer more cruiser ships or carriers and surely the best is the jem hadar dread carrier but takes long to get. I really want to use cruisers or carriers and have the same chance on events like these small damage pigs !

Btw: PVE only !

the "best ship" could be argued up and down all day. it really depends on your style and how you use your ship. if you are looking for a cruiser type ship with cannons, the galaxy x dreadnought would be my suggestion.
Sub-Zero Jul 23, 2013 @ 3:16am
Hate break it to ya, but the Galaxy dreadnought sucks with cannons. With that turn rate, all you are gonna experience is frustration. Very few cruisers are worth running with cannons and most of them cannot equip dual heavies.

I'd say avoid carriers entirely unless they are escort carriers. These ships are too heavy and offer way too little firepower for a tac player. My suggestion is, get an escort anyway.

While a tac can fly some cruisers like the Excelsior just fine, you won't ever perform as well in a cruiser than you would in an escort. Most tac buils don't get to use a cruisers toughness very well, so you don't get to use the one advantage a cruiser offers you.

If you wanna try out cruisers, just get one of the mirror universe cruisers from the exchange. They cost very little (look under reward packs for either mirror star or assault cruiser), and give you an idea of whether or not the ship type is useful to you at all.

I say the jem hadar dread carrier is a good damage horse similar to the romulan scimitar. Sure they cant apply damage to enemies that fast as escorts but they are still nice in spike damage.

For cannons on cruiser like ships i would only use the multi mission vessels or like above the jem hadar dread carrier, the hardest point for cannnos is the accuracy for such big ships.

My skills are fit for both ship types, i take a deeper look in guides and builds for skills and there are no really differences between the builds for tacticals. Like any other game there usefull and useless skills and a few for personal preferences like batteries etc. The differences are between defense, trusters and powers for engines and aux but most people dont skill engines and aux even on escorts. The rest are only science skills or stealth and the only interesting for me was the shield and energy drain ability to improve that for weapons.

I have these ship types, atm i have T4 cruisers and T5 escort from the steam bundle, now i get a two T5 cruisers and the jem hadar carrier. I only want to know if i have the same chances in pve for damage output in cruiser like ships as the escort people. Sadly the escorts where buffed in defense so i dont see any benefit to use cruisers and thats my issue.

I dont want to left behind on fleets and queues only because i use cruisers instead of escorts.

As a Federation character? no.

Their cruisers cannot compete with escorts in damage. Sure, there are some broadsiding builds that can certainly do respectable damage, but it will never be on par with a quad DHC escort. Too many people try, and fail, to build federation cruisers like 'battleships'.

However, Cruisers - in general - can do some really awesome things in a support role. Probably my favorite build is one that uses Eject Warp Plasma, Tractor Beams, Chroniton Mines and Attack Pattern Beta to severely snare and expose prey for the rest of the team. The better you can immobilize a target, the lower their defense value, the more damage you can do to them. Cruisers are also great as defensive 'healers' due to Extend Shields, Aceton Beam(Rank 3 cuts a target's damage output by 75% for 30 seconds!) and most of the good science skills being available at ensign and lieutenant bridge slots.

I've tried a couple, but I don't really like full carriers(Atrox, Vo'quv, etc.) as much as half-carriers(HECs, Vesta, FDCs, etc.), personally. Therefor, I haven't really got much advice for them.
WeylandYutani Jul 23, 2013 @ 11:32am
Means that only escorts and support flies pve queues or what ? i really dont like escorts and perfect world gives tactical cruisers like the sovereign class or the odyssey cruiser or themulti mission vessel. Thats all tactical ships- Why are these ships there if they are really that useless ?

I dont want to fly only support, heal or tank vessels its not my purpose. Sure every of these ships has the ability to support on the second side after the damage. But this ships are tactical, ok i dont tried the pve queues so i cant if people want me or not but all i hear from the forum and what i read on google sound bad.

I want a cruiser, carrier like ship with good damage, good defenese and a little bit on support. Thats all, there must be a way to reach this, i dont want to compete with escorts for sure but apply damage as max as possible.

Btw thanks for all your help.

I have a firend who may be able to help you but its only if your open minded about what you want out of a ship not just what you think you can get. This also includes taking the feedback with it. @Aiosha add her to your list. i'll msg her for you if your interested. But as with other replys. It all boils down to your style of play and how you want to throw the thing around. Hence why you don't go and belive everything you read.

What I was getting at is that there are big attack ships, "Battlecruisers", but they're limited to the Romulans and Klingons. The main issues with federation cruisers is that they do not have enough tactical bridge slots to fully use their weapons, nor are they able to mount Dual Heavy Cannons - which are considerably more powerful than other energy weapons. However, Federation cruisers are excellent at surviving damage and keeping people alive. I wouldn't call them 'useless', and love my Regent to bits.

From what you're describing, I think the ship that sounds closest to what you're after is the Jem'Hadar Heavy Escort Carrier. It's practically as tanky as an assault cruiser, with the potential firepower of an escort, comes with a hanger bay, and has the turn-rate of a science ship(halfway between a cruiser and escort).
Khunter Jul 23, 2013 @ 7:42pm
The game was built around the mmo holy trinity, thats why there are 3 character classes and 3 classes of ships for the Federation. Klingons and Romulans were an afterthought and thats why they don't have specialized ships. For a loooong time Klingons were strictly PVP for leveling, no PVE content at all.

That being said, if you're a Tactical captain get an escort. Your class skills are better suited to them and together fill the role of DPS.

If you want to be the tank, roll an Engineer and fly a beam cruiser skilled for threat. You will be able to tank pretty much anything with all the self healing and damage reduction skills.

With Science characters and their ships, they are support and dont do much damage but can pretty much shutdown the enemies dps or increase everyone else's.

You can try to be a hybrid character and it may work for you. My main is an eng who has flown a mix of escorts and cruisers. But dont expect to out dps someone in the queues that way. Someone who know's their role will always out do a hybrid.
WeylandYutani Jul 24, 2013 @ 12:18am
Until i get the jem hadar ships i use escorts to be on the save said but yeah i hate them, i really hate this "i have the bigger one" playstyle.

@ Tasadeus, thanks but atm i dont need advices in game mechanics it only sucks that there are really expensive ships what are completely useless. Im open minded for many things but i want to fly cruisers/carriers as tactical and be usefull for others even in the damage part. Surely not like escorts but usefull.

And again i dont want outdamage anyone, i want to reach a good damage range on the ladder to be usefull and not the fifth wheel. And i hate perfect world for giving the scimitar to the romulans and nothing comparable in this class to the federation because thats i nice damage boat.

Now the only thing what i want to know all the time is, is this possible with the actual avaible cruiser/carrier class federation ships (jem hadar incl) ?

That's simply not true. The Federation was thought of as a balanced race (call it our own ego to be the center of the universe) aimed at exploration and science. In fact ships like the Defiant were uncommon to the Federation because they were not aimed at war, it was the Borg who forced them into that position.

The Klingons were not an afterthought, Klingons were always about fighting, war and conquering, that's what their ships are about, everything else they need they steal/take.
Besides Klingons do fit the trinity somewhat, remember that the Klingons have 3 classes, the KDF (which includes Orions, Gorn etc) have like 6, but that's because the Federation has been working together for a long time now and Federation vessels are constantly captained by non-humans, so all research among these races are put into the same ships, for lack of a better term, they are one, which is not the case with the KDF.

The Romulans fit the you're so called trinity just fine.

As for cruisers going Cannons, it's simple, you need at least like 8 turn rate and 5 tactical boff slots before you should start considering them for PvE. Turn rate is needed for that 45 degrees angle and the 5 slots is needed for proper damage, this is because Cannon skills start at boff rank 2, even a Aux2Bat build wouldn't be sufficient.

Now I'm guessing that all lock boxes are out of the question, because if you don't have 75 mill for the Jem Hadar Dreadnoughy, I'm guessing you don't have like 50 mill for the Tal Shiar Adapted Destroyer (even though it would fit that mix perfectly)

So the only other ship that I can think of is the tactical Vesta -
It only has 3 front and rear weapons, but it fits other requirements.
WeylandYutani Jul 24, 2013 @ 8:27am
Destination is jem hadar dread carrier sadly this need 800 orbs or 80 mil e credits. Maybe i find one guy who sells it to me for 20-25 keys or something similar what can be traded.
Sub-Zero Jul 25, 2013 @ 7:35am
No way you will get one for 20, rather think 50 or more.

Values: 1 Key = 1.4-1.5 million EC. Carrier = 80 million EC.
WeylandYutani Jul 25, 2013 @ 7:57am
Yeah but 80 million is cheek and not worth it, with 25 keys i can more then enough of this orange marks to buy one on my own. So thats more realistical as the actual prices, im sure there is no one who buy them, maybe one player in a year buys it for that price otherwise the cant calculate really.

Btw romulan gets again a new ship surely better as fed ships, and dont say it depends on what you do, there is no ship comparable to the scimitar in that class of ships.

25 keys will definitely not get you enough Lobi Crystals. Not sure how you thought that, but that's simply not true. The prices are balanced, whether you think it's too expensive or not, is besides the question, but there are no cheaper ways to get it. So it's you really who can't 'calculate'.

As for the Scimitar, it has definitely some interesting features, but I would never use it, there are too many ships that I prefer over it.
Lindale FF Jul 31, 2013 @ 3:53am
My Engineer Caitian has the Jem'Hadar Heavy Escort Carrier with the Elite Scorpions, and I have come to love this ship. I can tank cubes all day long.
