Kind of new to STO
I'm not really sure where to start! Any suggestions?

Well... I like the game so far. Any ♥♥♥♥♥ could have claimed to make a STO game and made it crap. I think that STO actually conforms well to the Rodenbury canon, albiet with more combat but at lest we are piloting actual canon ships and facing canon aliens and exploreing the galexy.
Short version of what I think, really. STO could have been far, far worse by some ♥♥♥♥♥ who grabed the rights *coughsbramscough* but as for a "new" kind of STO? Umm... I don't really know. Maybe having a better minigame with the tricorder or more missions where you have non-combat roles?

Depends on which faction you started with. Romulans and Klingons have decent storyline campaign that helps ease you into the game. Federation.. is a lot more open-ended and it's more about exploring what you can do and finding out what you enjoy doing most.

I'm Federation, do you think I should play as one of the other factions?

Once you get the hang of your first character, I would suggest exploring other characters as well, also try to join a fleet if you are not in one already.

How do I go about joining a fleet?

The thing about the Federation is that their leveling progression is very.. disorganzied and thus can take a lot longer than the other factions. On the other hand, you have a much wider variety of activities available to you.

Ultimately, I'd probably suggest you try each faction up to level 10~15 and see which one you like most.

If you really like the Federation the most, probably the fastest way to level(barring special events like mirror incursions) is not the missions/episodes, but the patrols at each planet. Once you clear a sector, you'll generally be about the level to move on to the next sector and visit each of planets there in turn. In a way, Federation is very much about 'exploring' each planet you come across.

Federation is (in my opinion) the best way to start the game. You still level up relatively easily so it isn't a bad idea to go up even as far as level 30-40. And if you're having fun, keep at it. Or if you want, try some other factions.

I'd suggest getting to 10 in each of the three factions you have for now, because you're still new and it won't be so awful to go back to the tutorial levels - it'll also give you a taste of each.
