A decent single player game.
I say this because no one will talk to you in local and as a new player you can not chat in Zone chat where everyone seems to be talking.

You do not get money from doing missions or killing npcs, but you have to sell the loot to get any credits to buy stuff. A realy horrible system if you ask me, and nothing is truely explained in the help section of the game.

Progression is slow and you can't buy new ships unless you spend money in the cash shop, but you do get an upgraded ship at level 10.

If your looking for a social mmo with a sci-fi element then look to Eve Online, this game just lacks anything social what so ever.

1) Join a fleet or visit the official forums for chat and socialising.
2) You get EC from missions (not much to start with, but by the time you need it you'll have some juicy loot to sell on the exchange).
3) This game has some of the fastest progression I've ever seen. And with the ability to replay mission arcs at any point for level appropriate loot you can easily get a hold of decent gear.
4) You recieve a new ship every ten levels (except level 50 unless you are a life-sub) and can purchase other ships with dilithium. You also recieve free ships on occasion (such as the Breen ship and the current Ambassador class giveaway). There is also the Steam starter pack, they even discount it during sales. This gets you a ship for the end game and a new starter ship.
5) EvE is great, but it is complemented by this rather than being direct competition. This is a more arcade like game with faster paced combat, whilst EvE is slower and much more tactical.

It's not accurate to say you don't get 'paid' - every time you fight/scan/ destroy, you get items and most you can simply sell, or craft into other items that you can sell. You gamble on DS9 to make Latinum - easy money too - and some missions, repeatable daily, pay off in ore that you can refine and then use as 'money' - lots and lots of ways to finance your advancements in this game.
Yes, it's a GREAT single-player game.

and if you use the daily officer system you get Dilithium easy and EC sometime items. STO is an easy game to spent $ on but it has systems in place that you don't really need to. It will take an effort but it can pay off.

the game is cool, it's full of quests spread around the galaxy, missions can be replayed after a while but the best part is exploration and upgrading your ship in my opinion, also doing commerce can be fun, if u feel you are playing alone join a fleet, I prefer playing alone anyways and I occasionally talk to people I meet around

So far, and I'm now a Commander level 22, I've got 4 ships and 40+ officers; Dabo is a great way to make money... I Love flying the ships, although I was not happy that the competition levels with me, so that there still are no easy battles; I REALLY HATE the ground missions, and I really wanted to LIKE them, as exploration is what I want to do most; I've had to give up on a half-dozen missions for which there is NO last piece to find; or my crew beams 10' underground, or start to get stuck in corners; or reading about an unfinished mission that gives ZERO clues on where it takes place, (beyond the sector location...), and PvP can go fight itself; it's just a bully-me-please situation. There are so many things going on here that I don't 'get' and it is also a very poorly organized and documented game, even with all the data it contains, there are surprisingly few computer-driven aids to organize, compare, evaluate, track and manipulate everything. It would be nice for instance to see a cross-comparison chart of ALL weapons;, all equipment, so I can tell if this rareVIII gun is better than this common IX gun, and what ar all those different energy types about? Taychion this and duternorium (?) that - plasma, phaser, disruptor, yadda yadda - huh?
Not that I'm complaining, mind you, it is, after all, FREE!

I liked the ground missions, I did try one foundry mission and it was very confusing as it never gave me the next location to go to. I was half way through it and had to drop the mission.

As for the devs made content its ok, pvp sucks I agree.

I am looking for Encoded Data so i can make some nice items for my current level but am yet to find any.

Unfortunately you will progress well in advance of the data you need, crafting is best used to provide nice gear for new characters or to sell on the exchange.

What I find completely baffling is the money system - and the exchange; bizarre to me and incomprehensible. You can't buy anything with Latinum other than a pretend disguise that lasts only one hour? What is that about? Crazy stuff.

That hasn't been the case for me at least. I made a lot of my own equipment, I find the stuff on the exchange to be very expensive and the stuff i find in drops to be near useless so I started to make my own. I just need to know a place where i can scan down anomolies for the data for level 20 +

A lot of people, including myself, will turn off Zone chat altogether. I'm not talking minimizing the chat window - I mean going into the chat window settings and setting it to never display Zone at all.

I am in an active fleet, I am in a number of public channels that interest me, and I can see people in local. I don't need Zone. There are just too many kids, too much inane banter, too many trolls. I have a better gameplay experience with it turned off.

I think the cure for your problem would be to find an active fleet too. I emphasize "active" because there are a lot of fleets out there that don't team up for anything, don't talk to each other, and just aren't friendly places to be.

I keep getting random invites but I turn them down. I do this because they are never any good and will accept anyone to the fleet. And coming from Eve Online will usualy involve being scammed out of something.

I am downloading the game now and I hope that it is a fun experience. Your comments all around have been helpful in letting me know what to expect.

Welcome aboard, captain.
While I'm here I'd like to say a word about the support for the game; that word would be 'absent.'
But hey, it's free - it's cost me $25 to play for free so far; it will come down to a pay-or-die situation. I wish there was a way to NOT level up, I had a better fighting chace at lower levels - BUT, if I spend real money, I can get that balance back. Very Clever.
promytius1 Feb 20, 2013 @ 4:03pm
wow - here's a P.S. for you, on the COMMUNITY page for the game there is a tab GUIDES.
Check that out. I just discovered it; wow, it's probably there for all games; DOH!

It takes time to figer out, and what the game is about, and how to play the game. Don't waste your Dilithium on weapons on that game just yet. Wait until your level 50. Then start picking your weapons you want to spend on Dilithium for. And same way for your ship that you wanting to run in aswell. I had to learn the hard way on that. If you want a friend to help you with your gaming on that game. Here's is my gamer tag in STO. If your on the Fed side (Lonnie@BeefyDegree) If your on the Klingon Side (LuBu@BeefyDegree) You can add me as a friend, and I will show you more about that game, and give you also infomation on that game I have learned. I also, just joined a fleet, and can send you a Fleet Invite, if your not in a fleet.
