Legacy of Romulus Expansion: Thoughts
I would imagine that others would agree that the ability for new players to create any of the 3 factions from level 1 brings a start to balance (at least playerbase numbers) to the factions. I've yet to start a level 1 klingon but the romulan experience has been great. Storyline flows together well and it gives a sense of feeling that you are doing something to progress the Romulan Republic. There is also now a clear/ clearer focus on what faction represents what type of officers; Klingon for Tactical, Federation for Engineer and Romulan for Science. I would have liked them to flush out the classes a bit more and make them more unique, but I suppose that could come at a later date. The addition of warp cores was long over due but much appreciated (at least on my part, do you see a downside to having an additional space-equipment?). Some people have said that they dislike being forced to side with either the Klingons or the Federation. I can completely understand that, but this also gives a boost to side balance for numbers and also gives a greater reason to play as more than 1 faction, especially romulan: Having access to extra transwarp / starbase locations and access to any ships from that side is a huge upside. At first there wont be as many romulan ship types to get/buy, and so the romulan side will feel dry without having these additional ships. This also allows two different factions to get together for something in game without it being PvP/End-Game.
There are also subtle additions that have made it a lot easier for me to get into a groove when playing STO. The LCARS / GUI is poppy and easy to look at. I can't say I dislike anything about the GUI change. Voice acting (while mostly Tovan) is great, but should be added in Episodes that have already been made (it wouldn't be all that hard to add audio). The re-balance of traits to stop players from making aliens to pick and choose the traits (I have mostly / all alien characters before this change, but also to completely look different with a costume slot). The ability to activate and deactivate these at will is sweet for a game that makes you earn up a respec or pay for it (on skills).
I'm not sure how I feel about having 2 / 3 factions with cloaking. This basically leaves the federaton with a small number of cloak capable vessels for PvP (Except for their Romulan allies, which is a bonus to being forced to join one of the sides) I do like that the romulan side is more battle-cloak, and less cloak-cloak.
Anyway these are some of my thoughts on the latest addition to STO. What do you think? Has it brought enough to the table to bring a new light to it, or has this just been smoke and mirror brought on by mass-demand?
