Still feels like technologically impaired ppl put this together
Don't get me wrong I like Star Trek, always have, wished so hard for this to be up to the source material and preordered back when it first came to Steam but it is an utter disappointment in almost every aspect especially technologically.

It already was at release and got even worse with all the stuff they tack on to the terrible engine base they have while obviously not fixing fundamental flaws or expand in terms of technology, only recently their long in beta DX11 renderpath finally had some work done to it but it still remains to run worse compared to their DX9 path in most cases. They still use the old physx, their openal solution/ workaround still causes issues and performance wise oh boy,..

I hate to say it but the only thing they seem to do is to put lipstick on a pig :/

And since STO went free to play things basically felt to stall anyway, all they do is create new store content while technological things pretty much stayed the same. I always come back every now and then, hoping to see some advancement just to notice how it all got even worse.

I hate to bring WoW into this but Blizzard actually did a good job renewing their tech efforts, progression from the technological point of view at the end also keeps ppl interested (yeah sure they lose subs but still are doing great and far better than most) and more importantly pushed boundaries, limitations which allowed for more diverse game content and advancement in MMORPG storytelling/ gameplay.

The irony that of all things a Star Trek game, and even worse surely a bunch of devoted trekkie-devs on cryptics team are doing such a poor job at doing the source material and it's endless possibilities justice is just,... flabbergasting,...

EDIT: Please read the last few posts before you post, as someone wise said once
"try to think before you take out your rage on the wrong people", thx.

Well, the engine is starting to show its age, but they've still done a decent job with it. Yes there are issues, but I wouldn't say that any of them are game-breaking, or in any way detract from the enjoyment.

As for stalled development, I would have to disagree; the recent expansion has changed many of the core mechanics, and compared with what we had at launch it's almost a different game. My only real complaint is the fact that Romulan players are forced to join either Feds or KDF, when they should in fact have been their own seperate faction.

Let's also not forget that few companies have ever been willing to touch the Trek licence, especially after the early 2000s, so this is really the only choice for Trek fans at this time.

I agree and that's a large factor in STO, because it's the first two letters in that acronym that count here. If you are a fan of Star Trek then you know what kinds of games there are, especially in terms of controlling a spaceship. There are some good ones, but they are all outdated. While Star Trek 'Online' is a MMO, most of the content is focused on easily being played by yourself. Even the end game "STF" is with only 5 people. Also the new game 'Star Trek' was lack-luster. The LCARS change in STO alone is something a fan would want from the start. I know I'm liking it.

Sorry to say but i have no idea what you're talking about as far as DX11 performance goes. i have no problems performance wise and never have even when not using DX11.

as far as WOW goes, if WOW is doing so well then why are they down to around 6 million subscribers from 10 million? they are losing people every day. Sure they used to be top notch but again they are losing ground every single day to F2P MMOs.

OP has no idea what he/she is talking about. Go back to WoW and don't get hit by the door on your way out.

I stopped playing Diablo 3 because they happened to run their incessant daily updates at the precise time I had to play everyday (and so many other reasons!), and now STO is doing the same thing. It would be nice if these companies would put in the time and effort that is required from the start, instead of half-a***** it and then spending several days or weeks or months or years doing damage control.

It would be nice if people would freaking learn to read instead of moaning the whole freaking time!! There is a thing where u can find information its called, here it comes big shocker. THE FORUMS.. ( official site of sto btw for if u dont even get THAT. )

Oh come'on guys, try to be objective for once, I do love Star Trek no argument there at all, no need to be all like "don't get hit by the door on your way out" just because I mentioned WoW, you gotta keep this in context and it's obviously nothing like "some WoW fanboy complaining and ♥♥♥♥ting on ma staaa treek".

Cryptic just started their third MMO, "Neverwinter" and while visually they seem to get the most out of their ♥♥♥♥ty engine it is full of all the same bugs and graphic glitches and cpu bound performance issues STO has had from the beginning, which with all the lipstick on the old facade got even worse, this alone indicates little will and interest to improve on their part. Just look at their forums, where they essentially have a lot of the same/ identical stickies/ topics (various issues) which since launch of STO still remain largely unsolved.

Tho for some reason surprisingly many STO players don't seem particularly tech savvy either so they get away with it.

(what their article seems to miss is connecting the dots on why even more powerfull CPU's compared to older core2duo's or similar struggle with their game(s), it simply seems to be an poorly optimized/ bad coded engine, doing way to much stuff and even worse apparently rather inefficiently on CPU and thus always staying strongly CPU bound, same as it was and still is in STO.

Now of course if you throw a power monster at it it might just run well enough and you won't notice but that's not how it should be and it hinders progress in a lot of ways on top of all the issues it causes.

Actually considering the size of the team they have working on STO they are doing a fantastic job compared to most games with larger teams. Try to think before you take out your rage on the wrong people op.
Delu Jun 3, 2013 @ 12:03pm
Tell me what rage? I'm bringing up critical points, do you think keeping your mouth shut will help the game in any way? Also if the size of their team would be an issue why would they divide recources to form a new team to start a third (new) MMO (which is exactly what they did) instead of fixing long standing issues in STO?

"Try to think before you take out your rage on the wrong people." Right back at ya.

I don't know if it's Perfect World or Cryptic, but they seem to focus more on adding a little bit of content rather than fixing bugs in their games (I feel the same about Neverwinter). They make money by getting people to buy new things and not by fixing stuff, so there appears to be few people staffed to fix bugs. While I can see why they would make that decision, it really is disappointing to see bugs go unfixed for so long (possibly never).

Personally, I think STO is fun, but I would be lying if I said I haven't run into a bunch of annoying bugs that will likely never get fixed. If you're waiting for them to fix the issues you have, my advice is don't hold your breath.

Lol, you say "since STO went free to play things basically felt to stall anyway, all they do is create new store content while technological things pretty much stayed the same. I always come back every now and then, hoping to see some advancement just to notice how it all got even worse"

Yes they create new store content which you can get for free if you play the game alot, whats the point in having a lvl 50 char if you have nothing left to achieve. And next time you think about coming back to see if anythings changed, don't (WoW) I feel dirty just playing the same game as you.

p.s. I would quote but I can't be bothered.

Thanks for sparing me the wasted download. I can't stand these sloppy MMO's from these same crappy companies.

Well, first of all: I'm glad I found out your an angry twit before I joined your alliance. Second, what are you going on about? Are you capable of stringing together a relevant and comprehensible string of words?

With all of this maitenance they are doing, it's just been towards the server since this new patch came out. Sure, they have to fix up the mail, tailor and such but I have to give them credit for doing a good job for the Romulan storyline. It is interesting with bugs aside. Hopefully, they'll get their heads back in the game and help fix these bugs but I'm not even sure when that'll be achieved.
