how does the party system work?

Me and a friend have been trying to play together but are faced with the problem of having foes be my level which kind of ruins the experince for my friend. Can anyone help clear up how the party system works for me?

you need to have him as teamleader. he sends team invite then you match his lvl

A bit late on the response here, but..

(Almost) Everything in the game scales by your level and group size. Encounters that have a single battleship solo will scale up to have dreadnoughts with a full group, for example.

There is a mentoring system that allows you to match each other's level, but it does have some quirks. Always make sure the person being mentored enters a zone first - this will ensure that all of the spawns will be generated at their level. Second, the mentoring system has a very/stupidly short range. The person(s) mentoring is going to have to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't auto-cancel from being too far apart.
