Returning after a break
I have to say, there'a s lot of improvements on STO since the last time I played. It was fun enough I pulled an all-nighter. :D

I understand Klingons are getting a bit of a reboot along with the Legacy launch, which I'm also looking forward to.

Welcome back.. and yes, hopefully more people will be playing KDF, therefor buying stuff, therefor encouraging Cryptic to make more things for them. The Romulan storyline paints them in a very favorable light(moreso than the Federation, in my opinion), so I expect a lot of people are going to side with them.

Well change is good usually. Wait til you smack your face into the reputation systems of super grindynesss. Or the Starbase system of uber grindyness. Or the Duty Officer system of moderate grindyness.

Hanging out, running content with mates or a pick up group is all great. If you plan on hanging out for a lil bit. You look any anything in a larger long term sense, it's now got, or will be getting a big fat dose of grind to slow you down.

I am wondering, though, with the new stuff... is it a good idea to roll new characters, or continue with the old lvl 20ish one?

I got something like 6 duty crew with my old lvl 24 character, and 20-30 or so with my new one at lvl 8, which seems a bit of a big difference. Or is it just a mission I'm missing?

if you get a shared bank, you can make loot from lesser levels pass to other toons. So farmn with one and have cooler stuff for the other.

Ultimately, it's up to you. Duty officers really aren't difficult to acquire - just head to the academy and run around, speaking with the personal officer and the species exchange contacts scattered about. I don't personally think its a big enough deal to reroll over. The only reason I'd say to reroll is if you really do not what a character of a particular species.

Found out I could do the mission that gave the big set of duty officers so definitely not rerolling. :)

Still having fun!

How is the population of the game ? I played this when it first launched and i remember the space combat being very fun while the ground combat was utter crp

Population is good, been at least 15 instances of some areas. Ground combat has gotten better, but it's an MMORPG, it won't get great. But yeah, the space combat works VERY nicely. :)

Honestly... I don't think I've seen an MMO growing in terms of population and popularity like STO is since.. probably the blackrock spire-battleground days of World of Warcraft. The newbie forums are pretty active, and the community is pretty bustling as a whole.

I mean, when the game went free to play, it was a skeleton that was just barely hanging on. Legacy of Romulus is coming out because they've drawn enough people and are making enough money to fund a fairly signification expansion of their team. Not to mention being able to afford bringing in people to do voice over work - including actors from the actual series.

Ground combat is still pretty meh/frustrating at times, but I'm fairly jaded with all my years of 'traditional' MMOs. A lot of the newer encounters can be particularly irritating being chain-disabled and hit with party-wiping attacks. Bridge Officer AI really doesn't help matters - it's more interesting with actual players.

might give it another go i need an MMO in my life ...
