Torn up between classes
For a few days now I've been trying to figure out which class I wanna play, but each guide I look into states another class to be considered 'good'.

I have a few specific demands tho for the class I want.
For starters I will be flying escort class ships cause I like dishing out damage. Which captain I should fit with it however, I don't know...

Tactical captains feel weak as they tend do die alot, but maybe it's just my gear. I do however like to dish out alot of dmg. Which class fits the description (and not to forget the ship) the best?

Tactical tend to be best matched with escorts

The best is relative.
Most of your offence and defendisive abilities depend on both gear and bridge officers.
From what limeted information you gave us, you seem to prefeer highly agrassive gameplay(aka attack attack attack) to that end i would advise klingon tatical.
While tatical charaters die alot quicker then engineer or science charaters.
It is only a minnor anoyance to die.
There are also several skills that allow you to increase your firepower(check the wiki)

If on the other hand you want to be a survivor you cant go wrong with engineer.
The amount of times my engineer repaired his ship from near death to full health is high.
There main downside(and the reason i stop playing them) is that there ground combat is useally:
Set up turret/healing node/shield generator, lure enemy, rise and repeat.

Science is more about healing buffing and debuffing.
I dont play them because most of my enemies died too quickly for there (de)buff's to mather.
Still there great allies.

theres 1 science player for every 2 Tactical players and 3 Engineers for every 1 Tactical.

pick science as your main.

So science isn't all that popular?
I'm not sure if I like the 'buffing-debuffing' role, since I wanna do pure and raw damage, but maybe I'll give it a shot.

EDIT: I'm guessing you mean actually flying with a science ship as well? Or just picking a science captain?

Doing maximum damage is primarily about buffing and debuffing. Tactical Captains do a fair bit of both - on land and space. If you're not investing in attack patterns as a Tactical, bluntly, you're doing it wrong. The thing about Tactical captains is they sacrifice almost any kind of survivability for all the damage they can put out(again, on land or space).

Science Captains are primarily debuffers and controllers, but they do have some nasty aces up their sleeves to bring the pain. They're pretty nasty in escorts with their ability to strip buffs and cripple their prey. Rather than getting offensive buffs like Tacs, however, they have some useful defensive tools instead - a Scattering Field to reduce incoming damage and Photonic Fleet to draw fire.

Engineers are the master buffers and survivalists. They can squeeze more performace out of any ship they fly, but they don't get the tools to debilitate and focus down their opponents like Science and Tactical Captains.

As for class popularity, I wouldn't really say any are particularly more or less common - I see plenty of all of them flying all sorts of combinations of ships.

I personally found Tactical to get quite boring, so I switched over to Engineer. Fights usually take a little longer, but being able to take on groups of ships is pretty damn awesome.

i use a tactical for my escort, i run 3 dhc and a torpedo on my fore and 2 turrets and a torpedo on my aft, i bring a butt load of pain in a fire fight, im using an adv. escort by the way and when my shipyard gets to 5 ill be getting the fleet escort carrier, thats gonna be goooood lol...ill post my skills on here later to show what im pushing on my escort, the thing is, dont mix energies when doing your weapon loadout, burn up to much power, had a friend of mine teach me that hard lesson lol, stick with 1 power source ie, plasma, phaser, disruptor etc etc, me, i have disruptors dhc and turrets, a quantum and plasma torpedo set up and consoles to boost disruptor and torpedo damage, other consoles i have are for increased shield healing, pretty nice set up, i can hang with the big boys in most, if not all of the pve matches lol

3/4ths of TAC captains are terrible and don't know how to play. Its sad because I out DPS them with both my ENG or SCI and manage to not die, unlike tac captains who die multiple times in almost every PvE encounter.

I strugged with this question myself. I played all engineers until I started to think things through.
I rarely ever need to use the eng survivability because BOFF skills are almost always enough to carry me through. There are exceptions like certain one shot borg torpedoes, or other mega attacks. Miracle worker doesn't give any resists so its not as great as it appears if you need it while under heavy fire. Most of the game is a huge dps race. Engineer fleet embassy turret is bugged since forever, and mostly useless because of it.

Go tac or sci.

well op, here's my setup for my bridge officers:

Com. Tac.:
tac. team 1
torpedo spread 3 ( just a preference lol )
cannon: scatter volley 2
attack pattern omega 3

Lt. Com:
tac. team 1
cannon: rapid fire 1
attack pattern omega 1

Lt. Eng.:
eng. team 1
emergency power to weapons 2

Ensign Eng.:
eng. team 1

Lt. Science:
hazard emitters 1
transfer power to shield strength 2

and like i said before, i use 3 disruptor dual heavy cannons in my fore weapon slots with 1 torpedo ( plasma/ photon, cant remember ), and 2 disruptor turrets in my aft slots along with a torpedo as well, im trying to save up on dill so i can do the dil to zen conversion so i can get some fleet modules cuz i want the fleet heavy escort carrier, thing just looks beastly plus i get 1 hangar whoohoo!! lol, and i fly my escort like a fighter jet, do my strafing runs and all that way i can get those shields down as fast as possible so the heavy hitters ( you dreadnaughts and cruisers lol ) can bust the hulls wide open, i try to support the big guns on the team as much as possible, but if i get overwhelmed, i got no problem with running for a bit ( teammates, you guys understand right? lol )...my main concern with my escort is pumping out as much dps as possible to get the enemies shields down as fast as possible so my teammates can get in there and destroy em.

i guess it depends on what role you want to fulfil in my opinion, escorts are just that, they help the big guys by ripping the shields down as quick as possible, more like a support role i guess

Escorts and Cruisers are everywhere. You can't go into any endgame content without being swarmed by them. Each career path and starship choice has its merits though. Tactical is great for hit and runs and throw out a lot of dps. Engineering hold up well as a tank or an omni directional support ship/healer, and science is pure support.

I have to admit that I love my main escort, my tanking cruiser, and my science ship all in differing but equal ways. People tend to say that Science is weak, therefore they side with the other career paths, but let's just say that my Voth Pallisade throws out a LOT of DPS purely because I concentrate on my abilities and weapon types rather than generalizing (like most of the afore mentioned "people who have no idea what theyre doing").

For that ship, I've concentrated on Particle Generator abilities and making a complete mess of the battlefield with AoE attacks, a multitude of Transphasic warheads and Tractor Beams. I don't pretend to have amazing weapons or shields, but I have to say that In our fleet PVP matches I out-DPS most other players with it. I don't generally get the kills, but the mess that I make tends to hurt :)

The joy is, a lot of people tend to target big hulking cruisers and escorts first because they see them as the bigger threat. So half the time you go pretty much un-noticed in PvP matches :)

I'd go by the ship you want to play...each has it's own roll and what is best will depend on your style of play and a lot of other factors.
