Questions about ship combat.
After looking at the various screenshots and some videos, I'm only really interested in the ship battles. How soon can you get to them? Do you have to grind your way on foot for the most basic ship, or do you start with one? Or at least get one not too far into the game?

You get your own ship right after the tutorial , and A new free one every 10 lvls.

Thanks for the answer! I know there's ground based gameplay, but if I wanted to skip it, could I just stay in space and do random ship crap till the early morn?

Not really m8 , this is STO it kinda follows the story line of Star Treak thought if you want to dismiss the story line and only go around playing Distress calls and finding Enemy contacts in space you could do that thought the leveling process will be slow and painfull , Each Story line mission gives you a level or 2 on higher levels and about 3 levels on lower levls and you could do like 10 Story line missions a day ( wich contain a mix of space and ground combat) while it would take you about 10 days per level without them , wich means you will never get better ships or gear
The Ground combat thought is great and the story line is amazing for every start treak fan , thought for people who havent watched star treak or dont like it this game will be just a slow grind with some cool Space fights..

I'll download it some other time then. I've got a huge backlog, but nothing that really scratches that "Deep Space Crap" itch. Combat to be specific. I got space games, but nothing really like the combat showed in the gameplay videos.

I have no doubt the story is great, but I've played a lot of MMO type combat games and I was looking for something a bit different, like the space stuff.

Once I blow through my backlog a bit, I'll download this first. I'll make sure to give the ground combat a solid chance too.

I've never watched Star Trek, though I always wanted to get into it. The length of the series was a bit intimidating though, so I always put it off.

Anyway, thanks for all the help!

You could try Forge quests. I love them. It's a system unique only to STO that I've found among MMO's. They are player built missions that give you experience and in game currency for completion. Some of them are simply outstanding. If you download this game, I highly recommend it.
