How long will this game be here?
So I really wish to play this, and I'm thinking about downloading it, but I'm always worried that ''the free to play'' model will stop the game from generating income, and it'll have to be gone or something.

people in my fleet spend like 200 bucks on stuff...its not going anywhere. the devs are constanly getting actors from the shows to do voice work to add in.

I look forward to it, then!

f2p sometimes does better then a p2p model.
Infact it usually does.

Smaller percentage is paying, but ironically they always pay more then usual.
In the first month i spend over 200 euros myself, simply because i didnt have the patience to wait to get some of the lobi ships i really wanted for 1 or 2 characters.

Also i subbed, spend about 50 euros on zen store ships and items.. so all in the first month.
If i do that, im sure some if not most people go even beyond that.

To repeat what I've said before:

This game went from being on the brink of being shut down before it went Free to Play.. to being able to afford to expand the team(how many MMOs can you say that about these days?), develop expansions, and hire actors from the series like Michael Dorn(Worf) and Tim Russ(Tuvok) to voice their characters ingame. STO is probably PWE's highest earning MMO in the western market right now.

Don't worry, the game/playerbase is still continuing to grow and it will be around for a good, long while yet.

Thanks for all of your input.
I'll install the game now, and play it when I get home from work.
I look forward to it. Thanks!

trust me, free to play is making them loads of money

Yeah my wife just spent $100 on that dyson ship package plus loads of other stuff STO can survive on just her alone.

One of the few good F2p games (with a sub option) on the market so no worries about it being sunsetted, the vast majority though are indeed throwaway crap with more development going into the cash shop than to the game...

The only thing I can't stand is how ridiculously expensive zen is for cosmetic items. They take advantage of Trek fans by making us pay to wear all the cool uniforms we saw on TV haha... Those items should at least be unlockable in-game without having to pay anything.

They are.. if you grind dilithium and use the dilithium exchange.

The only things you're forced to buy into are veteran rewards and things from special packs/versions(steam starter edition, boxed collector's edition, etc.).

They've semi-announced an expansion for this year, and they went to the expense of having Tuvok (Tim Russ) record content recently (Some of which has already been released) as well as having Worf (Michael Dorn) reprise his role at the end of last year.
zomg, I just tried to update and reload this game after being away from it for over a year. What a nightmare. You have to access 3 different sites with 3 different accounts just to use it. From Cryptic to Perfect World, and now to some silly thing called Arc. Sorry this just isn't worth the hassle. Uninstalling. It was a fun game once but I'm not jumping through hurdles to reload it just for nostalgia purposes.
