Warning, if you've never played this game, minor spoilers ahead. (Like, really minor, but spoilers nonetheless.)
This game is a unique combination of simple, easy, difficult, relaxing, laid-back, humorous, and just general old-fashioned fun. Holy crap it's fun. Basically you crawl your way through levels of the dungeon to get to the main bad-guy, accumulating a number of unique and silly items, skills, and badassery. Levelling up always feels good, and gaining a skill almost always has a noticeable affect on your combat.
Fair warning, you will die a lot. And if you're like me and love pain, you'll play on perma-death (which is optional). On about my fifth character, I was really getting into the swing of things. I had tons of items. I had a pocket dimension I could go to to dump unwanted detritus that might be useful in the future, and I'd just made it through the second floor (still haven't seen the third; the floors are fairly big and ooze with content and monsters). I was fairly powerful at this point, at least for the floor I was on, and easily laid waste to waves of monsters with the help of my zombies and clouds of poison that I conjured. So, feeling like a badass, I hopped over to my pocket dimension to drop off some loot, when I noticed that from said dimension I could also leap to other dimensions! "Okay, cool," so I did. Plowed through one small dimension, no sweat. So I go to another, run into two monsters, kill myself with my own poison cloud. It was my fault for not paying attention, but alllll the hard work, the several hours I'd put into his skills, levels, items. Gone!
At that point I said to myself, "Okay, this is probably the point where going back to the first dungeon just becomes a tedious grind, and I won't want to play anymore." Well tonight I felt like trying again, trying some new skills. Frankly, it's no less fun than when I played for the first time. The floors are all randomly generated, so it's never the same run between characters.
My current character has kicks that literally explode into fire, tearing through enemies like nothing, and I'm only on the first floor.
It's not just the content, it's the little quirks. You can tell the developers had a blast making this game. Everything shines with creativity and humour, and it's just a lovely little game gah I love it.
10/10, recommended a thousand times yes. It's cheap, you should buy it with the expansions. Get ready to lose at least a few hours a day.
