How good is unarmed combat lategame and what builds is it good for?
I've only reached floor 5 using an unarmed fighter type build. The early damage is broken but it won't scale much higher. Lategame with weapons I was hitting 60+ whereas with unarmed I only hit 30~. I guess unarmed will hit only 50%~ish of the damage a weapon would, but the extra shield makes for some absurd tankiness.

Double Mirror Darkly Shields and you're set in terms of magic defense, but I think kicking Dredmor to death is quite impossible, sadly. As you said, the damage falls off near mid-game. It's been a while since I last tried an Unarmed run, I might try again soon!

Unarmed is a good defensive skill and that's the best way to look at it. I actually use it a lot for my mage or gish builds. It's strength is defense and knockback, and not damage.

In any case, most people try to avoid melee with Dredmore anyway so that's not a huge consideration. If I'm building a standard melee guy, unarmed is usually not my first choice, but it still can fit in just fine with many different kinds of builds.

Agreed, Unarmed is good for defense, but isn't that good for offense, esp. on later levels, my personal fave for melee combat is Axes.

The EDR and Crit chance do make for a great melee set-up. In essense, Crit chance is basically an Enemy Counter Reduction, too.
