Lord Dredmor behind bars
my first time through the dungeon, only on Elvishly easy but it still took some time and I'd like to know what's the boss all about so he doesn't smash me in one hit on higher difficulties....

the problem is he's in a room seperated in half by lava and iron bars :rage:

is this normal? or is there any way to pass water/lava or those bars?
cheers

He shows up at a random place on the floor every time, so no, he won't necessarily be walled off from you.

The way to get past the barrier if this happens again (or if you find yourself in another situation where a part of the dungeon you need to get at is blocked) is to have a teleport ability (something like the Burglary tree's Moves in Mysterious Ways, or the Ley Walker's Invisible Geometries, for instance). There are also spells and wands that will ignore the barriers, but I'm not sure whatall ones off the top of my head (been melee mad mostly, of late), so you can hit him without passing the barrier.

Nothing is 'normal', as it's all randomized. That's actually a good thing.

1. Keep in mind that single-target thrown weapons ignore all intervening terrain, so if he's blocked by the bars, that should still work; and of course AE weapons will detonate when hitting the bars, so those are still good, assuming he's not too far back from them.
2. In any case, it's also possible that there are breakable walls in his vicinity. If so, explosives or other abilities may open up an alternative path.

The only type of weapon that may be problematic, of course, are single-target bolts, and if you were saving up, I could see that being an issue. An option, of course, would be to go back up and raid all of the appropriate vending machines for decentg weapons. Concentrate on weapons that give you Righteous damage, but failing that, weapons that give you piercing will also be good. But you'll have to still overcome his piercing defense, which is relatively small, but not insignificant. Holy Hand Grenades are generally considered the ideal weapon for this purpose, but if you can't find enough of them, just get thrown weapons with high piercing damage.

You just got lucky, or unlucky, as the case may be. But it is not an impossible situation by any means.

In any case, if you are that deep, you should have plenty to experiment with to see what hurts him. Your melee damage bonuses will add to the damage of thrown weapons, so it's possible that if that's significant, that any single-target thrown weapons will be good enough. You shoud have plenty by the time you've reached him (assuming you were smart and picked up all thrown weapons, since they are indispensable for melee builds). And you can experiment while he's trapped behind those bars before you go off searching for more thrown weapons.

thanks for the feedback, in the end he just blinked across the room..... and killed me in 2 turns :died:

what the hell? this is not what I consider elvishly easy. How much resistances do I need to be able to stand for more than 2 turns?! and how the heck do you kill him with Permadeath? I managed to squeeze 200hp out of his pool after an hour of save-loading. this is the biggest wtf moment I've encountered in a game so far, and I've played Binding of Isaac a LOT..

There are two different versions of Lord Dredmor. I had assumed that the harder one was simplly for the harder difficulty level, but I've been told (And I don't know how reliable this is) that actually, the harder one is for the level 15 version, and the easier one is the level 10 version. If that's true, then you fight the same version of Dredmor that I fight on Going Rogue.

Dredmor IS quite beatable. But playing on Elvishly Easy without permadeath, it will be all too easy to reach level 15 and not actually be prepared for him, simply because your gear and stats have not been tested. IF you play on Going Rogue, pretty much if you've cleared levels down to him, then you have the potential to kill him and win the game.

Here's what I suggest: go back up a level or two (I assume you have invisibility potions or inky hoglanterns, but if you don't, you may be out of luck). Then scour the shops, and rob Brax of the best gear you can find, because I assume that you don't have the best if you are dying so easily. Especially look for magic resist (but magic reflect, of course, is useful). It's actually relatively easy to get your magic reflect up to 100 (it's less important than magic and other resists, but tons easier to get). Dual mirror shields alone will get it up to 98, for example.

Raid every vending machine for arrows and thrown weapons. Retrieve any potion and mushroom that you dropped off in your pocket dimension for a rainy day. Pop one of every useful one of them before getting into his range, along with the best food you have. Make sure you have either Potions of Purity or Zodiacal wands on you also. And of course, you want every inky hoglantern and invisibility potion and healing potion and potion of lively regeneration and potion of replenishment that you saved up for this moment.

Note -- don't make the newbie mistake of using a healing potion or eating food when your health gets low. Instead, turn invisible or teleport out of sight first (if you have the ability to do so). Don't wait too long to use potions of purity or Zodiac wands when you get nasty Damage over Time (DOTs) and debuffs on you.

Note, if you have a blowback skill like Ragnar's Meteor under Maces you can move bars out of the way.

In some ways it's easier to kill him with permadeath. As, if your character has made it all the way to the end without dying even once, that character is going to be very strong, much stronger than a character that could only make it to the end after dying lots of times.

Yes, the two different versions in the game files are just for level 10 vs. level 15. But, as I understand it, different difficulties apply level modifiers to all the monsters, including Dredmor, so the EE Dredmor is still easier than the GR one.
