Dungeons of Dredmor
New-ish Newbie Looking for "Challenge" Run Partner(s?)
I browsed the web looking for Steam Roguelike recommendations, and GHGGHH, I was not disappointed with popular opinion!

I'd be pretty interested in making some friends with people who play DoD... but I'm not very good at the game yet (currently having gotten as far as BF3 before dying), so fellow "newbies" would be nice to know. :>

As for what we might do, I'd be curious about trying themed runs of the game... I'm hesitant to use the title "challenge" run, as the game is already pretty hard and making it moreso might elevate it to a level of brutality some might find difficult to tolerate. |D; But random skill tree rolls and such seem like they might be interesting.

Anyway... Longass "Discussion" end! -Aayamid/Annie/w/e

I'm playing DoD off and on but I'm not very good at it. I don't know how to raise my crafting skills and I don't know what to keep and what to drop. My highest score is about 85000.Challenges won't make much sense without mastering normal play, don't you think. Well, maybe it helps keeping up motivation, might be.
I think there's a lot of fun to be had in getting out there and doing dirty work in a game that you don't have total mastery over, personally. It's how we all learn, in the first place.

Anyhow, I look forward to getting down to the next floor... the last Monster Zoo sucked, but I dealt with it well enough.
Hey, I've been playing DoD for the last months and I'm really pro... at dying. But I love (hate!!!!!!!!) this game so much. So far my record has been Floor 5 and around 120k points, but I really didn't look into crafting so much... just having fun so far discovering the classes, making crazy builds, etc... I'll be adding you and I'm up for anything, both in this or any other game that we own.

to be "good", it is actually good to make a "theme" for your build, meaning choose a primary damage skill, then concentrate enforcing that particular skill tree. you'll have much higher chance that way.
I THINK what he meant by themed runs (though I could be wrong) is that you put specific limiatations on your build, for purposes of a competition. For example, a pure crafting-themed build could be something like: Tinkering, Smithing, Alchemy, Wand Lore, Paranormal Investigator, Clockwork Knight, and Rogue Scientist. For variety, you could replace one of the last three with any of Perception, Fungal Arts, Burglary, and/or Piracy, since they also can be helpful in different ways to dedicated crafters. Or you can make the rules looser and just require that you take all 4 crafting skills. I've actually won on PD/GR with a pure crafting build (it's not as bad as you might think).

But you can make any kind of theme or special rules that you like for a competition. On the official boards, they simply had a no-mod competition, and a no cheat mod competition each with semi-random builds (with special rules as to discarding one or two builds that you didn't like, add your top 3 scores out of 7 were typical rules).
That sounds more or less right, Haldurson. :) Looks like I have a friend in saikun! Here's to many runs and much "fun!" (ie. dying)
Dude, I don't get it. You haven't beaten the game yet, but you already want to set some "special rules" for yourself? What's the point?

As for making some friends with people who play DoD, feel free to add me. I'm not pro at this game yet, but maybe I can help :D
Competition can be fun. Remember that unless you are an absolute prodigy at the game (and there may be a few of those, but I'm not one), your goal usually is to merely get the highest score you can, maybe get as deep into the dungeon as you can, without dying. That's generally how most people play rogue-likes. It's nice to win, of course. But just because you didn't win, doesn't mean that you didn't have fun.

Anyway, that's why he's asking for other newbies (so at least he's playing with others that are close to him in skill level/knowledge of the game). I'd love to participate, except that I'm not at all a newbie at the game.
