The graffiti contains codes. Each code corresponds to a different Wizardland. If you make a typo or enter in something which is not a code, the portal will turn red. If you step through it, it will bring you to Diggle Hell instead of a Wizardland.

Note that once you complete a wizardland, you can never go back even in subsequent games, and that code will no longer work. If you don't complete it (that is, use the exit), then you can revisit that wizardland.

The level on which a code is found will determine the level of the Wizardland. So if you are using codes that you've obtained in different runs, or from someone else, make sure that you know which level that code was from.

What you might want to do is keep a notepad or something similar. Every time you find a new code, make a note of it, along with the level you found it on. Once you complete it, cross it out.

Note that the Wizardlands can contain special rooms, including some that are, apparently very rare, so they can add a lot of variety to the game. I try not to use spoilers, but if you wish, there's a couple of threads on the Gaslamp forums for sharing codes:

Remember, if the color of the portal is red, you probably mistyped the code. If you are not of a reasonably high level, you probably will want to avoid Diggle Hell. That said, there are a few achievements that you can only get in Diggle Hell.

Yes. There are a whole lot of combinations, so you don't have to worry about running out.
Just delete the file that keeps a record of visited wizardlands. Revisit the good ones on subsequent attempts.

You'll never run out anyway, because there's just so many, and you'll miss out on some of the surprises if you keep revisiting the same ones. There's some unique rooms you'll find in the wizardlands that are extremely rare.

In any case, I'd never do that for the same reason that I never farm wizardlands, nor would I use them as a cheap escape from trouble. It kind of cheapens the experience.
